As a female, first-generation college student who has earned three degrees, was a vice president at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland, Ohio, and am currently the chief executive officer of the largest Community Action Agency in Ohio, with annual revenues at the time of this writing of over $140 million and 400 employees, I have learned a number of lessons as I navigated the “jumble gym” to leadership that Sheryl Sandberg described in her book Lean In: Women, Work and the Will to Lead. Many of which were not shared with me but hard-earned knowledge that would have been helpful to know during my ascent to the C-Suite. One example is the necessary change in perspective required at each new leadership level -- each level requires a perspective and skill set(s) not necessarily required at the previous level, as well as a broadening of awareness of one’s role and responsibilities within the organization. This is another way of saying that each time a person progresses from one leadership role to another, the context in which he or she operates must be understood in a different way. Let me state unequivocally that not everyone should take a leadership position; you should know better than anyone else whether you can face up to the responsibilities and their associated stress. However, if, like me, you feel a pull upward, then be prepared for the ride!

Leadership Lessons: Notes From and For the Journey is a primer of often hidden or unconscious issues that confront those who are in or aspire to leadership roles. Understanding these could make the difference between successfully navigating the journey to leadership or delaying or derailing it.
About the Author
Jacklyn Chisholm, Ph.D. has over 30 years of experience in personal and professional development, strategic planning, and government and community relations. Dr. Chisholm is the Founder and President of It’s Worth It Consulting, LLC. She also serves as the President and Chief Executive Officer of the largest Community Action Agency in Ohio with revenues of over $42 million annually. Prior to that she served as the Vice President of Strategic Planning and Institutional Relations at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Dr. Chisholm is the recipient of numerous awards including the YWCA Women of Achievement, Crain’s Cleveland Business Women of Note, Women of Color Foundation ISIS Award, and Council on Education National TRIO Achiever. She was admitted to Case Western Reserve University where, over the course of 20 years, earned three advanced degrees: a Bachelor of Arts in medical anthropology, a Master of Arts in psychological anthropology, and a doctorate in psychological anthropology with an emphasis in educational anthropology. In addition, she has earned an Executive Certificate in Nonprofit Leadership from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government, as well as certificates from Harvard Business School, Cornell University Johnson Graduate School of Management’s Administrative Management Institute and University of Pennsylvania Wharton School of Business.
