File:Flag of the United Kingdom (3-2 aspect ratio) - alternate.svg[edit]
Exact duplicate of File:Flag of the United Kingdom (2-3).svg. Alkari (?), 30 June 2017, 19:32 UTC 19:32, 30 June 2017 (UTC)
- They're obviously not byte-for-byte identical, since they have different file sizes. With various past disputes and optimizations, I've kind of lost track of which images look the most similar among the three variants now existing... AnonMoos (talk) 22:01, 30 June 2017 (UTC)
- Keep -- wait a minute, File:Flag of the United Kingdom (2-3).svg was supposed to be the version where the vertical bar of the red cross of St. George was narrower than the horizontal due to simple rescaling, while in File:Flag of the United Kingdom (3-2 aspect ratio) - alternate.svg the cross had equal-width arms. That changed when User:Sangjinhwa uploaded his "optimized" version of File:Flag of the United Kingdom (2-3).svg, but it shouldn't have changed. I'm hesitant to revert Sangjinhwa's upload, because the file is in use on different Wikipedias, but File:Flag of the United Kingdom (3-2 aspect ratio) - alternate.svg and File:Flag of the United Kingdom (2-3).svg have different intended purposes. Also, File:Flag of the United Kingdom (3-2 aspect ratio) - alternate.svg is actually mainly authored by User:F l a n k e r, so you need to notify him... AnonMoos (talk) 22:11, 30 June 2017 (UTC)
Sorry, I seem to have stumbled into something rather complicated here. It looks like File:Flag of the United Kingdom (2-3).svg and File:Flag of the United Kingdom (3-2 aspect ratio) - alternate.svg (which are currently visually identical) have equal-width arms measuring ⅓ of the flag's breadth, as is usual for the Union Jack; File:Flag of the United Kingdom (3-2 aspect ratio).svg has slightly narrower equal-width arms, about 13⁄45 of the breadth. Was the latter as intended? I see that the old version of File:Flag of the United Kingdom (2-3).svg had unequal arms and was a rescaled version of the 3:5 flag (not the 1:2 flag, as stated on the description page).
I trust there might be a use for the rescaled version, but evidently no Wikipedia is currently using it. What if one of us uploads that afresh as File:Flag of the United Kingdom (2-3 rescaled).svg or some other name that makes more clear what it's intended to be? In the meantime, this file is still a visual duplicate of File:Flag of the United Kingdom (2-3).svg and unused outside of Commons, so I do think it should go.
I've notified User:F l a n k e r now; apologies for the oversight. I look forward to hearing their view on this as well. Alkari (?), 1 July 2017, 21:30 UTC
- Hi, thanks for calling me. The flag was intended to update that one: File:Flag of the United Kingdom (3-2 aspect ratio).svg that I need some times ago (probably I've missed the Ssolbergj's flag). I don't know why there are two version of them, probably Anon save my version to another name (Flag of the United Kingdom (3-2 aspect ratio) - alternate.svg). I think we can delete it. --F l a n k e r (talk) 20:58, 2 July 2017 (UTC)
Alkari -- Myself and User:F_l_a_n_k_e_r had a dispute over what image should be at File:Flag of the United Kingdom (3-2 aspect ratio).svg, as you can see on the file history of that page. I uploaded File:Flag of the United Kingdom (3-2 aspect ratio) - alternate.svg to have a place for his preferred version, but if he doesn't care about it now, maybe it can be deleted. File:Flag of the United Kingdom (2-3).svg was intended to be a purely mechanically rescaled version, with thinner vertical crossbars than horizontal, but that changed when User:Sangjinhwa uploaded his "optimization". Revert User:Sangjinhwa if you want to give File:Flag of the United Kingdom (2-3).svg the distinctive purpose it formerly had, but I'm not sure I feel comfortable doing so now that it's in use in a number of places... Kept: Not an exact duplicate - colors are subtly different. Any "duplicate" that requires this much discussion that isn't a very clear "delete" on all sides should probably be kept. --Storkk (talk) 11:17, 24 August 2017 (UTC)
