Book which may be of interest[edit]

I found at a very, very cheap price in a used bookstore near where I live "Canadian City Flags: 100 Flags from Abbotsford to Yellowknife". (With older flag versions, alternative flags, and flags of former municipalities merged into other municipalities, there are actually a lot more than 100 flag illustrations in the book.) I guess this is more up your alley than mine, so if there's any info in the book which could be helpful, feel free to ask me... AnonMoos (talk) 12:11, 3 December 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]

That definitely perks my interest. If you're up for doing some scans, that would be great. Fry1989 eh? 17:25, 3 December 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I'm not really set up to do scans now. Maybe I'll just send the book to you sometime after the holidays (i.e. earlyish 2018) -- though the last time I mailed books to Canada, I had to fill out a customs declaration, and the person receiving them had to pay some kind of tax on the declared value. My favorite flag so far is Inuvik, Northwest Territories, while my least favorite is that of Lethbridge, Alberta (a.k.a. "Fort Whoop-Up"), which is "reflective of what an inebriated person might draw while attempting to draw the Stars and Stripes"... -- AnonMoos (talk) 07:17, 5 December 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]
That is a very kind offer, though you don't have to if you don't want to. I ship a care package to the US for a dear friend some times and I've had to fill out the customs thing, but he's never had to pay anything on the receiving end. I've also never had to pay on the receiving end for shipping for my banknote collection from various countries including the US, and that's actual money so those have real monetary value...sounds weird to me. Re: Flag of Royal Military College of Canada[edit]

I originally posted the following on PneumaticEditor's user page:

I updated the .svg image for this flag as you suggested, however, user Fry1989 revised my change on the file itself. He says that "It is unclear if the proportions have been deliberately changed or the flags were improperly made." In any case, the .svg version should be used, but should it be the tricolour version or the pale? This is unclear. It appears that in historical contexts, and when RMC flags are sold commercially on the internet, they are 2:3 tricolours, but in contemporary RMC use they are 1:2 pales. That being said, I cannot find any official justification for the change from tricolour to pale.

Here, if you look at the image on the bottom right, the original heraldric artwork for the flag of RMC St. Jean is shown, and it is a tricolour in 1:2. Perhaps this should form the basis for the flag.

Regarding the motto, I believe it should be only in English, as the motto is recorded only in English in the original blazon, which is the authoritative description on how each element of that coat of arms is to be depicted.

What do you think? The CSOTK (talk) 05:10, 9 March 2018 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Request for some simple flags.[edit]

Hey I'm just wondering if you could do a simple request, it's File:De Zavala Flag.svg, could you realign the letters so they're actually centered between the points? And maybe change the font to News Gothic?

Beyond that could you also make a variant of it where the S is at the bottom? Since that was actually the format used on the back of Texas Dollars.

Also can you make a red variant since that was mentioned in contemporaneous newspaper reports at the time? Thank you. --Thegunkid (talk) 08:35, 25 April 2018 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Thegunkid: , sure I can take a swing at it. Fry1989 eh? 18:56, 29 April 2018 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Thegunkid: , is that better? I didn't have the font you mentioned, but I used RutaCL which is rather simple. Fry1989 eh? 18:20, 1 May 2018 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Yes that's great, just be sure to make the variant with the S at the bottom since like I said, that's the format used by the Republic of Texas, and currently used by the State DPS for their seal. --Thegunkid (talk) 23:40, 2 May 2018 (UTC)Reply[reply]
To add I think the one with the S at the bottom should be the main one, with the current one being a variant. --Thegunkid (talk) 23:43, 2 May 2018 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Before you continue with: UK ~ Singapore ~ Quebec[edit]

I noticed that all these countries were on your todo list. I'd figure that I should give you some information before you undertake these endeavours.
First off: UK. I would be willing to guess that you are familiar with the official illustration repository. However, I do not know if you are aware of the official construction sheet/working drawing repository. If not, let me know and I'll give you the link.
Next up, Singapore. So, we have official government documents. However, the vector illustrations included within are of poor quality. But since many of Singapore's road sign designs are of British origin, it would feel justified to just use the British vector drawings, where applicable and appropriate.
Lastly, Quebec. I know for a fact that you are acquainted with the Quebec repository. I would also guess that you are aware of the construction sheets. But just to be sure, I might as well ask. If you are unsure on how to access the construction sheets, let me know.
VulpesVulpes42 (talk) 17:49, 15 May 2018 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@VulpesVulpes42: , hi there. Always happy to hear from you :)
So firstly I'll address Singapore. Some of the diagrams do look quite inferior. I've been spending my spare time the last few weeks using Google Streetview and Flickr and some other repositories to try and collect as many photos of real life signs as I can. Some really are "that bad". Take [1] and [2] for the quayside sign, and [3] and [4] for the no overtaking sign, as examples. So I intend to try and make the signs be faithful recreations, even though you and I both think the symbols are pretty shoddy looking. Also a side note, it appears that prior to the late 1990s, Singaporean road signs did not use the backing board and were cut out based on their shape like in most countries. I have collected several photos of signs such as [5], the stop sign, give way sign, and others. I intend to recreate these as well.
Regarding the UK. When you say official repository, I presume you mean the TSRGD website? I did have a free subscription to it quite some time ago, but then they switched it to a pay service and the price is far too high for me to afford. Which is a shame since the EPS files were of really good quality. I do not know of any construction sheets, so I would be happy to see what you have.
With Quebec, I also did not know of any construction sheets. I would also appreciate the link to that. Fry1989 eh? 18:33, 15 May 2018 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I didn't actually know that TSRGD was a thing before you brought it up. For free, you can find both EPS images and working drawings on the good old gov.uk. (you'll need to scroll down the page till you get to "Traffic signs images and drawings", and then click on any of the "schedules"). As for Quebec, here's how to access any working drawing. You know this website where you can browse image galleries and download image files? You need to click on any sign in the gallery. When you are on that road sign's individual page, you should see a button "Afficher le devis technique (PDF)", or "View the specifications (PDF)" if you are browsing the site in English. Depending on how your browser deals with PDF files, the PDF construction sheet should either begin downloading, or open up in a new tab. I also believe that they give you the option to include a PDF construction sheet when you download road sign image files. - VulpesVulpes42 (talk) 19:25, 15 May 2018 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I see. They made a web app for the TSRGD. It was very useful. I knew that the signs were still available on the gov.uk website, but they were of lesser quality the last time I checked them out. But that is great to see they have been improved since then.
With Quebec, I never noticed that. It appears not all the signs have that option, or at least not the most recently added ones. But that is still very helpful. Fry1989 eh? 19:58, 15 May 2018 (UTC)Reply[reply]
As I see it, the British EPS drawings could be useful starting foundations, then fine-tuned according to the working drawings/construction sheets. Very happy that I could help! - VulpesVulpes42 (talk) 20:06, 15 May 2018 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Favour request for someone with excellent command of Her Majesty's English[edit]

Sorry to bother you at this tumultuous time, but I would be quite grateful if you could take a quick look at the closer provisions of road sign A19 on my personal sandbox. While I am mostly happy with the translation, the expression "communicate instructions regarding" feels really wonky. I was just wondering if that is A: even grammatically correct, and B: appropriate in context. Thank you for your tremendous help not only towards me, but towards the entire project! —VulpesVulpes42 (talk) 17:28, 12 August 2018 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I will certainly take a look. Thanks. Fry1989 eh? 17:41, 12 August 2018 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thank you! Now, I am afraid of coming out as a jerk who asks for help, but then is like "nah nevermind", so let me make one thing clear: You replacing "communicate" with "provide" was immensely helpful and something that I would not have been able to figure out myself. Will keep that for sure. With that said, I have reasons behind the choice of wording when it comes to everything else. When translating Swedish legal texts into English, my number 1 priority is to get the idea across as precisely as possible. My second priority however is to translate everything as literally as possible (within the realm of English grammar and vocabulary, of course). This is why I wrote "especial risk" instead of "high risk", since "särskild" means something in the style of "especial" or "non-ordinary". If you do not have any strong objections against it, I may use "especial" instead. But if you do have objections against that wording, due to it for instance being ungrammatical or not getting the idea across, I would happily settle for something in between, like "especially high", or even just "high", if my arguments were unconvincing.
Then, I also saw that you replaced "may" with "shall". In the original Swedish version, the idea communicated was more similar to "the transport agency has the right to provide instructions". Maybe it's just me, but the idea that I get from your translation is that the agency is expected to and will announce new symbols as necessary, while in reality I *believe* that (while the agency has the right to issue new standardized symbols) one is supposed to ask the Swedish Transport Agency for permission if one wishes to put up a sign with a non-standard symbol. Unless you have any objections, I will probably replace "shall" with "has the right to". Once again, thank you for being so helpful and for being an excellent co-user! —VulpesVulpes42 (talk) 18:29, 12 August 2018 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Hi. Don't worry, you don't come off as a jerk. I like helping people. I can understand the desire to make the translations be as similar as possible in both wording and the thought being conveyed. My choice to change "especial" was that it is a uncommon word and sounds archaic (to me). The word "especially" is much more common, but if we use that it would require some additional word such as "especially high" or "especially frequent" which you may dislike. I think the synonym "exceptional" might fit well here. But I will leave it up to you. Regarding the second part, I have no objection to changing "shall" to "may". I understand the less strict interpretation that is attempting to be conveyed. Fry1989 eh? 22:41, 12 August 2018 (UTC)Reply[reply]
First off, your help has been invaluable. I got what I came for. You think that "especial" sounds archaic, which I find interesting. You see, Wiktionary categorizes less fashionable words using three words, which are (from weakest to strongest): "dated", "archaic", and "obsolete". "Especial" isn't actually assigned any of these words, so with all things considered, that is probably the word I'll end up using. I just see it as a word where the adverb form for some reason has become a lot more common than the plain adjective form. What's archaic in one language is formal and even common everyday use in another.
We are essentially done here, so once again, thank you for your help. Cheers! —VulpesVulpes42 (talk) 07:52, 13 August 2018 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hi. When I made Flag of a Governor-General of Canada.svg, I wasn't aware that it also applies to Lieutenant-Governors. There's probably a much more suitable name for it, but vexillology isn't my area of expertise. Maybe "Flag of a Canadian Governor.svg" is sufficient? Maybe "Blank vice-regal flag of Canada (1870–19??).svg"? What's your opinion? TilmannR (talk) 19:39, 26 November 2018 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Question about creating road signs SVGs[edit]

I want to create some SVGs for older Ohio road signs out of the 1950s and 1970s Ohio MUTCD, however I'm having an issue determining the size of the letters.
So I'll get a "Letter size & Series: 4 1/2" D". Now, I get that the 'D' means a 'D series' font. But I don't know how to measure the letter size. The documents don't provide any guidance. How do you you do it?--The Navigators (talk) 12:03, 10 February 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@The Navigators: , there are a few options for road signs that I use. The first and most ideal is some form of construction sheet, like this (which I extracted from an ODOT PDF) or this from an online government repository. Both contain exact dimensions for all the elements of the sign. The other option is that many PDF files contain SVG versions of the sign within them, so even if it is missing the dimensions, you can extract it into Inkscape and still upload the sign. Depending on how old these signs are though, that may not be possible. If the document you are relying on only has raster images and lacks the dimensions, really all you can do is give it your best guess. And when signs use a special font, such as FHWA, it becomes nearly impossible. There are many US road signs I want to upload but I have not been able to get my hands on a true copy of that font so I have had to put them off. If you can show me what sort of documents you are using for these older signs, and whether or not you have the FHWA fonts, I may be able to give you better instructions. Fry1989 eh? 18:50, 10 February 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Here's a page out of the 1967 edition for parking signs, document lacks working drawings, which is amazing given that cities more frequently made their own signs back then. Guess it's going to be trial and error. Good-ish news is most of the signs I want to make aren't overly complex, mostly rectangles with text.
Regarding fonts, someone over at the graphics workshop told me about a webtool for identifying fonts, maybe you've herd of it, maybe not: What The Font. Even if there isn't a digital copy of one of those older fonts you're in search of, it might suggest something that is basically indistinguishable or could be reworked to make signs.

(I'll also leave this link here, it's an archive.org copy of a 1966 edition of Standard Alphabets for Highway Signs Not sure if it's of use to you, but you never know. Also, archive.org has a few documents from Montana's highway department if you're ever in need of older sign documents from that state, along with some other stuff.).--The Navigators (talk) 00:10, 11 February 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]

(talk page stalker) Although I don’t have the means to reverse-engineer a proper font from them, I should be able to extract vector images of individual FHWA characters from the current (2000 series) Alphabets PDF, if that would be any help to either of you.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 00:50, 11 February 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@The Navigators: , so in that document the signs are in raster format, so you can't simply extract them into Inkscape. In that case the only thing I really can suggest is you go based off of the dimensions for the signs in some of the more modern PDFs. But that example leaves me somewhat curious. They appear to have the federal MUTCD designations, most of the states add some sort of personal symbol to their signs, like Texas adds a T to the end (File:Texas W11-25T.svg) an Delaware adds DE to the end (File:Delaware D12-6-DE.svg). So you will want to make sure to differentiate between federal and state signs. That Standard Alphabet PDF is nice, but not really helpful since the letters are all raster. I would love to look at some of the older Montana documents, btw.
@Odysseus1479: , that would absolutely be helpful and appreciated. Fry1989 eh? 18:36, 11 February 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Odysseus1479 (talk) 20:05, 11 February 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]
BTW the letter images in the recent Alphabets PDF are not raster, but are generated ‘on the fly’ from embedded subsets of the fonts. So the derived paths will be constructed identically to the original glyphs, unlike a vectorization that’s created by tracing raster images.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 21:47, 11 February 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Here's a link to a search at Archive.org that brings back the Montana documents (They're mixed with some irrelevant documents, but the sign ones stand out). As for the sign file naming I'll trail the numbers with "OH" (Ohio) or "PA" (I have a few documents with Pennsylvania road signs from more recently, but also raster.) and the year if there's multiple versions, unless you have a better strategy or standard.--The Navigators (talk) 20:52, 11 February 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@The Navigators: , thank you for that link. As for how we name the files, there is a new standard I have set up and intend to eventually rename all my files to. Because all the federal signs are named "MUTCD..." with the sign number, I named all my California files "MUTCD-CA...". I think it would be good to name the state signs that way with the state abbreviation. Fry1989 eh? 20:32, 13 February 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Add superseded regulatory signs to bottom section of /Gallery/Road Signs/United States[edit]

Hey there! First of all, I just want to say that you are doing amazing work categorizing and recreating these road signs. There are actually a few superseded signs you seem to have missed.

R3-2 is the same as R3-1 but "RIGHT" is replaced with "LEFT"

Of course, however, we would need proper, full-quality renders of the signs before such a thing happens. I've heard that you're good at that.

Oh, and as an aside, you're missing the metric version of W12-2, but you still included the construction metric version :P

I appreciate what you do and I hope this helps you out!

@Dangeredwolf: , thank you, you're very kind. I do want to upload the older versions of these signs, but I do not have a proper copy of the MUTCD font or construction sheets for these signs. Similar signs were also used in Canada from about the 1950s to the 1980s. They are also on my list, but again I have no construction sheets so they are kind of a guess at best. The images you have uploaded have measurements for the sign itself, but not for the text. As for W12-2, you said I am missing the metric version. Did you mean File:MUTCD W12-2 METRIC.svg? Fry1989 eh? 20:14, 1 March 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Fry1989: Yes, that is the sign I was referring to, sorry for the delayed reply, I never received any notifications from Wikipedia that you replied for some reason. Dangeredwolf (talk) 20:04, 12 March 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]

(talk page stalker) Did you get my email with a PDF of one of the alphabets attached? I’ve been awaiting confirmation that you can use it before processing the others the same way.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 22:01, 4 March 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Yes I received it, thank you. I should have sent back a confirmation. Fry1989 eh? 23:33, 4 March 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]
No problem, and no rush–I’m just prone to forget about things completely once they’ve been out of my face for a few days. I’ll proceed with extracting the rest of the alphabets; feel free to give me a nudge if you don’t hear back within a week or so.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 00:20, 5 March 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]

George V flags[edit]

Hi, the flags are the coronation standards of South Africa, Australia, New Zealand and Canada. RainbowSilver2ndBackup (talk) 18:04, 7 March 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hi, yes thank you, I do have that source. I've just kept putting off making them. We do have Australia and New Zealand done though. Fry1989 eh? 18:55, 7 March 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Road signs of Namibia[edit]

Hello!

You did a lot of work and excellently painted the SADC traffic sign. Would it be possible for you to draw more specifically for Namibia?

I could upload sketches or photos to each one of them. --Lidhe (talk) 13:24, 22 July 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hallo Lidhe! I have a PDF of the Namibian Government Gazette from 1997. Most of their traffic signs are identical to SADC. I have uploaded some variations, such as File:SADC road sign IN16-NAM.svg. If you would like to show me what signs for Namibia that are missing, I would be happy to draw them as well. You can email them to me, or upload them and show me here on Commons. Fry1989 eh? 18:48, 22 July 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hello! That's really great.

Here is a link to a pdf. There it is special about the imformation signs. On page 8 and 9 are still one of the characters of the IN series, which are still missing.

That is great, thank you. I will work on them very soon. Fry1989 eh? 20:50, 22 July 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Hi! You were really hardworking. I found a link where the resolution is a lot better. https://documents.pub/document/rtsigns-charts.html --Lidhe
Thanks. I am trying my best. Thank you for the link. I am a bit of a perfectionist which is why I am a bit slow. Fry1989 eh? 20:07, 25 July 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I see you have already done a lot. Last week, I tried to create svg files. Now I understand what work is behind it. Thanks for that! Here is another link to a file. In this file on page 327 to page 376 is specifically about the tourist traffic signs. I am particularly concerned with the signs of Namibia, which differ in the caption. Unfortunately, the server is currently offline, which contains a pdf file with colored traffic signs. Especially for Namibia (perhaps as -NAM create), there are the characters: GF1, GF2, GF3, GF7, GF8, GF10, GF17, GF18. Can you continue with them? (Please omit the traffic sign GF9, I'm still looking for an example.) --Lidhe (talk) 11:46, 29 July 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Here is a LINK with the symbol of the National Park in Namibia and a LINK with colored tourist signs. --Lidhe (talk) 06:18, 30 July 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Hi. I was away on a little trip the other day and that is why I was not active. I do intend to upload the tourist symbols as well. Fry1989 eh? 19:57, 30 July 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Great, you almost made the tourist signs. I have already started to create the service signs. Do you continue with the symbols from B1 on?
Here are two characters R530 and R531 which are still missing. Both signs are available in blue-white and white-red. I uploaded a sample for you. The font should be the default road sign font, I have used a different font for the pattern.
The character R326 (so to say R326-NAM) is used in Nambia as a simplified version. Here a link: Bus-Stop in Namibia. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Lidhe (talk • contribs) 07:27, 7 August 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hallo :). I do intend to keep uploading all the symbols for tourism and services, and then go back to IN11. I will also upload R530 and R531 some time as well. Fry1989 eh? 15:51, 7 August 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Hi! That's great. I saw that you drew the symbol GFS B1-7. There is another symbol for this. The Namibian road sign catalog looks very different (page 382). I found a photo on the internet. --Lidhe (talk) 07:22, 8 August 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Yes, I noticed that as well in the Namibian Gazette PDF, but the image was too low quality for me to use. I am trying to find an SVG version of the SRIN logo, but it is difficult. They do not appear to have a website. Fry1989 eh? 15:52, 8 August 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Here is an link, with a picture (bmp) with the logo. But it is an very bad quality. --Lidhe (talk) 16:10, 8 August 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thank you. I will make a Graphic Lab request for the logo, I do not think I can make it by myself. Fry1989 eh? 17:27, 8 August 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]
This picture is a little bit better. --Lidhe (talk) 18:19, 8 August 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Can you change a little thing in between? THIS SYMBOL does not exist according to the catalog. More appropriate is THIS VARIANT because there is no symbol. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Lidhe (talk • contribs) 13:28, 14 August 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I am not prepared to deal with the route number signs yet. They are confusing because there are inconsistencies in shape and colour in the SADC-RTSM and in real life. Fry1989 eh? 18:10, 14 August 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Can you please draw the D1-17 for Namibia as a green character with yellow B1? Many thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Lidhe (talk • contribs) 20:01, 15 August 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hi! Do you still remember the following symbols: D1-13, D1-14, D1-15 and D1-16? Many thanks!!
Do you already know what you are doing after the GDLS series? Then I could already prepare something for the page. --Lidhe (talk) 09:29, 20 August 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hi. I will create GFS D1-13 – D1-16 soon. I have a construction sheet for the arrows, but I am not good at math so I have put it off for a little bit. After the GDLS section I intend to do the GDS symbols section, since most of them are similar and it will be fast. After that, I should go back to IN11.XXX :) Fry1989 eh? 16:14, 20 August 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Perfect :)
Could you draw the character GL3 in between? For Namibia the village "TSUMEB" is used as pattern in the catalog. The character is to be used for a template, in which currently a fantasy town sign of Windhoek is involved.--Lidhe (talk) 18:20, 20 August 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I will work on those signs as well at some point, but they may be difficult. They require a special version of the DIN 1451 typeface called BMOD with bold characters, which I do not have. Fry1989 eh? 18:45, 20 August 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Look on THIS side, maybe that helps with the creation.--Lidhe (talk) 19:07, 20 August 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Did the link help you?--Lidhe (talk) 14:02, 21 August 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I do have a copy of DIN 1451, but I do not think a digital version of BMOD exists. It was created by South Africa, instead of the Deutsches Institut für Normung. I may have to make the signs using the normal DIN 1451 Engschrift typeface, but they will not look as accurate. Fry1989 eh? 19:04, 21 August 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Fry1989: Here is a LINK to the page of the "sartsma" for chapter 4 and 5 of the RTSM. There you can see on page 47 the constuction of the signposts, arrows of signposts are on page 56 and a typeface of the font BMOD on page 69. Does this help you?
In Namibia, e.g. only the DIN are used because BMOD has no umlauts. In Nambia, there are towns that contain an ä, ö or ü (such as Lüderitz) and there are only in the DIN 1451. I have already made several patterns of SIGNPOSTS. The font was definitely DIN1451, the letters of the DIN were congruent with the original that I had tested before creating. --Lidhe (talk) 17:26, 22 August 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I will see what I can do. Fry1989 eh? 19:24, 22 August 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I do not like disturbing you all the time, but the SRIN icon has a misspelling. There is "Nstitute" and not "Institute" (SADC road sign GFS B1-7-NAM). --Lidhe (talk) 12:23, 23 August 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Can you please do me a favor? I need the pictured "Fluss/River" as dashed symbol, for a dry river „Trockenfluss/Rivier“. Did you store it then please AB-Trockenfluss.svg Thank you!
Fluss/River-Symbol: Fluss --Lidhe (talk) 20:17, 2 September 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Sure, I will try and make that later today. I also will get back to the SADC signs, I've just been taking a short break. :) Fry1989 eh? 20:30, 2 September 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]
It is not the best, I will try to improve it in the future. File:AB-Trockenfluss.svg. Fry1989 eh? 23:39, 2 September 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Summary of open SADC traffic signs[edit]

Hi! I once created a small summary of the still open traffic signs.

Simple traffic signs:

Combined traffic signs:

Change request: -

@Fry1989: Status of the list: 19-10-17 --Lidhe (talk) 12:25, 17 October 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]

By now you are really advanced with the IN. Excellent! --Lidhe (talk) 18:40, 16 September 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Yes, they are still on my list. Regarding SADC road sign R325-NAM, that is not an official sign. The Namibian Gazette shows the same design as used in South Africa. But I will try to make the sign and upload it as an unofficial variation. There are still so many signs to make, however, so I will be taking breaks and working on other countries' road signs and other images to avoid fatigue. Thanks :) Fry1989 eh? 19:22, 16 September 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Yes, R352-NAM is not an official traffic sign. The User:Chtrede lives in Namibia and has repeatedly pointed out to me (with pictures) that the official traffic sign is not used. There is only a simplified version. --Lidhe (talk) 12:26, 22 September 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]
If it is ok for you, I keep the list up to date. I have now inserted the IN11. —-Lidhe (talk) 17:01, 28 September 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Danke, I appreciate that very much. I am taking a bit of a break and am going to work on other countries now, but I will return to SADC. However, I will try to do the ones in your list first. Fry1989 eh? 17:36, 28 September 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Perfekt, vielen Dank! I'm just doing a few little things because at the moment I do not have that much time. That's why it suits you to do something else. —Lidhe (talk) 19:10, 28 September 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I hope that it will not be a problem for you if I enter small "change requests". I also make a pattern in a png-file of what I mean exactly. When you change it does not matter. As you have time and desire. Vielen Dank für die ganze Arbeit :-) --Lidhe (talk) 10:21, 30 September 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]
For your most recent set of changes, I am unsure if we should procede. Photos show that the backing board can be grey, the same colour as the signs on it, or be optional. The files currently show this variation. Fry1989 eh? 20:04, 3 October 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Sorry, you're absolutely right. It's exactly the same in chapter 2 as you wrote. This has done the change.
I still have a change request to the sign for bus stops. Without a concrete example such as B13, it is incomprehensible. I'm smarter now, B means bus and 13 is the stop number. So all stops in Namibia are numbered in the city. Danke :) --Lidhe (talk) 18:08, 5 October 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hi! Would you like to draw some SADC traffic signs again? There are still a few characters missing from the catalog. Maybe you have time to start with the GS series (GS100-GS900, Guidance Signs and Symbols)? --Lidhe (talk) 05:21, 28 July 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hi. It is on my long-term list, but I need to finish Finland's new signs introduced in June. Fry1989 eh? 18:14, 30 July 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Ciao, Fry

please can you rename this file File:Royal Standard of England (1553–1558).svg, recently uploaded by me. Reason: year wrong

>>>> ERRATA: 1553; CORRIGE: 1554.

New correct name: "File:Royal Standard of England (1554–1558).svg". See for references: File:Royal Arms of England (1554-1558).svg and date of Mary I Tudor marriage (25 July 1554).

I apologize for my error.

Thank you, ciao, (FDRMRZUSA, talk) 18:41, 11 December 2019 (UTC+1).

About Argentine road signs[edit]

Hello Fry1989. Thanks for having properly categorized the images of Argentine road signs that I have recently uploaded. I have only a couple of question.

Firstly I have seen that you removed the "license review" template and added the "public domain - Argentine road sign": are you sure of this ? According to the template the files that are in public domain are only the ones that are published on the Official Bulletin but the files I have uploaded comes from the Manual de Señalamiento Vertical which it is not a law published on the Official Bulletin but only a publication of Vialidad Nacional and so I am not sure that the template will apply to this signs. Luckily the Manual of Vertical Signs (but not the Manual of Horizontal Signs!) is published under CC-BY 4.0 and so it is ok for Commons.

Secondly I have seen that you have tagged the other Argentine road signs already on Commons as "deprecated". In my opinion it is not totally correct since effectively that files depict the ones that are in the Anexo L which are graphically different from the ones from the Manual (the first one are from 1994-1995 while the second are from 2016-2017 if I am not wrong). It wouldn't be better if we keep them as older version of actual signs ?

Greetings, --Civitas13 (talk) 22:09, 15 January 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Greetings. I am always happy to see another contributor in the field of traffic signs. I am also very happy that you are working on Argentina because that is one that I could not do. I have the 2017 MSV and have had it for a year or two, but the images are all raster and the more complex images lack detailed construction sheets. I do not know how to convert complex images into SVG, so the only signs that I would be able to accurately create would be simple ones such as File:Argentina MSV 2017 road sign R-25.svg or File:Argentina MSV 2017 road sign R-2.svg.
Regarding licensing, I was uneasy about the license review tag. My fear was that some users/admins that work in licensing and have a more narrow interpretation of copyright would question it. But having seen the source for the Creative Commons license, that is no longer a concern. I added the PD-AR-Signs license for good measure. I would expect the new signs to have been published in a national gazette or bulletin, though it is true we do not know for certain. If you believe we should remove that license, I accept that.
In regards to the previous drawings that I have marked as depricated, I did so because I considered them low quality and rudimentary, rather than accurate drawings. But we can also remove the deprication tag if you wish.
One other thing, I have similar documents for Venezuela that I would be happy to send to you, if you would like to work on that after Argentina. They also have raster images without construction sheets, so sadly I can not do that country either. Fry1989 eh? 23:27, 15 January 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thanks for replying; I think that I will add again the license review template, with not hurry, to be sure 100% not having copyright problems in the future. Just a couple of infos about the drawing of the signs. As you said the image of 2017 MSV are only raster image so the only way (at least for my not so great skills with vector images) to convert in vector file is to make screenshot of 2017 MSV images and retrace patiently them on Inkscape; the great difficult is to reproduce the text and as you can see I haven't uploaded many signs with text since it is very difficult for me to reproduce them. As you can seen I haven't already finished all danger and mandatory signs of Argentina; I think I will do all them in the future but now I have only a few time for drawing images (so for the moment I can't help also with Venezuelan ones, sorry). Regards, --Civitas13 (talk) 08:54, 16 January 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]
That is understandable, and I appreciate your assistance and contribution. I have put the Venezuela PDF booklets in my dropbox. You can keep them for the future, whether you create the signs some day or not. I am happy to share. Fry1989 eh? 19:36, 16 January 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]

House of Plantagenet: new Coats of Arms[edit]

Ciao, Fry

yesterday I uploaded 2 new coats of arms, this:

However, as result of fatigue, I made an orthographic mistake, this:

  • ERRATA: "Castile )" >>> no blank between Castile and bracket.

PLEASE can you rename 2 files listed above? >>> CORRIGE: "Castile)"

New correct name:

  • "File:Coat of Arms of John of Gaunt, First Duke of Lancaster (as claimant King of Castile) type 2.svg";
  • "File:Coat of Arms of John of Gaunt, First Duke of Lancaster (as claimant King of Castile) type 3.svg".

I apologize for my error.

Thank you, ciao, (FDRMRZUSA, talk) 16:39, 28 January 2020 (UTC+1).

Ontario Road Signs Wiki gallery page.[edit]

Hi Fry: How are you? Though it took me a heck of a time to get the hang of this whole WikiMedia, but you bet I am very SUPER-GRATEFUL of your Ontario Road Signs gallery, yet I live in Toronto. I too am awfully loyal, since my high school years, to MTO traffic personnel, and have done lots of research of certain publications, from map panels to manuals.

If ever possible, I really want to help contribute, to help you further add to your galleries with AI/PDF copies of MTO MSL files. I could E-mail attach files for you, that you'd be here-and-there surprised how seriously I've made some in-depth dents, not to mention the changes through DHO-thru-MTO era times. Thanks ahead, yet we'll see from there... :) — Preceding unsigned comment added by JamieMalecki (talk • contribs) 17:18, 9 May 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]

WOT flags[edit]

Hello, and sorry for the intrusion, but given your work with flags on WC, I was wondering if you'd be willing to help with the creation of an SVG File for a certain flag described within The Wheel of Time novel series, and the alteration of another already existing File from the same series? Because I do genuinely think these two particular flags would be simple enough to create/alter in SVG from, even though I'm no expert on art. Snow Lion Fenian (talk) 17:34, 30 May 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Sure, what information do you have describing them? Fry1989 eh? 17:59, 30 May 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Fry1989: Thanks for replying.
Well, the flag that needs altering is this one here, namely the "Flag of Tear". I'd like to request for the size dimensions of it to be altered so that it matches those of the previous version of the File, but without changing the new order of the colours. I know it's a very minor thing, but it would bring said flag more into line with the sizes of the other WOT flags that already exist on WC, as seen here.
And the flag that needs creating is the "Flag of House Trakand" which is described in the novels as consisting of a "silver keystone" on a "blue" field. You can see a coat of arms version here, which of course the flag is the same as (although there's probably no need for the black border around the keystone).
Thoughts? Snow Lion Fenian (talk) 19:28, 30 May 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Snow Lion Fenian: , as requested. File:Flag of House Trakand.svg. Fry1989 eh? 23:54, 30 May 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Fry1989: That's terrific work you've done on both Files, and thank you for your help. Very much appreciated. Snow Lion Fenian (talk) 10:30, 31 May 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Fry1989: Hello again, and once again sorry for intruding, but since you helped me out with those two WOT flags a few months ago (and thanks again for that by the way), I was wondering if you'd be willing to create SVG files of another two flags from the same series? Because, again, I don't think these particular two flags would be that hard to create for someone with art experience, though I could be wrong. But I hope you don't mind me bringing up the subject anyway? Snow Lion Fenian (talk) 11:53, 11 August 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Sure, I can give it a try. Fry1989 eh? 16:12, 11 August 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Fry1989: Thanks for replying. Well the first flag in question is the "Flag of House Mitsobar", which is described as consisting of "a green anchor and sword, crossed" (in the Glossary of A Crown of Swords) and also with a "white" background (in Chapter 1 of The Path of Daggers). This image here (which appears as a chapter icon within the WOT novels) should provide an idea of the formation of the anchor-and-sword emblem. Now, if you do decide to do this, I'd recommend using the anchor and sword templates provided below (large in part because those particular templates were created by the same artist, so it might provide a sense of consistency, if you will).
And the second flag is the "Personal flag of Elayne Trakand". This is described in Chapter 32 of Knife of Dreams as consisting of a "Golden Lily" on a "blue" field. Now, if you do decide to do this one, I'd recommend using one of the lilies provided in the template below (specifically the one sticking out of the left side of the stem, as I do think it would suit best).
And, of course, if you do decide to do these, I'd also ask that the flags be kept within the same kind of size dimensions as the others in the WOT Category, as most of them all already roughly the same size anyway.
Thoughts? Snow Lion Fenian (talk) 22:14, 11 August 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Fry1989: Thanks so much for doing those files, terrific work on both fronts, and sorry for the delay in getting back to you. Much appreciated as always. Snow Lion Fenian (talk) 19:59, 15 August 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Fry1989: Hello again, and sorry for the bother, but I was wondering if you'd be willing to create another two SVG files of flags from the WOT series (and thanks again for your help in this field before). Because, again, I don't think these ones would be that difficult for someone with artistic experience. But I could be wrong. Snow Lion Fenian (talk) 21:13, 1 November 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Snow Lion Fenian: , sure, I can take a look and maybe give it another try. Fry1989 eh? 18:25, 2 November 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Fry1989: Thanks for replying. Well, the first flag in question is the "Personal flag of Mattin Stepaneos den Balgar", which is specifically described in Lord of Chaos Chapter 9 as consisting of three silver leopards on a black field. Now, if you do decide to do this, I'd probably recommend using the leopard in the arms provided below, as it seems rather ideal for use in this case. Unless of course you know of a more ideal SVG leopard available. But of course that's only if you do decide to do this.
And the the second flag in question is the "Flag of the Panarch of Tarabon", which is specifically described in Chapter 30 of The World of Robert Jordan's The Wheel of Time as being effectively the same as the actual flag of the nation of Tarabon (below), but with a green staff added behind the tree. Now, since there's no actual description of exactly what position the staff is displayed in behind the tree, I'd probably say that it be put in a diagonal position (and facing to the upper-right), as it seems practical in this case. And, if you do decide to take this on, I'd recommend using the staff from the arms provided below.
And, as with previous requests, if you do end up doing these files, I'd ask that the flags be kept within the same kind of size dimensions as the others in the WOT Category.
Thoughts? Snow Lion Fenian (talk) 15:23, 5 November 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I should be able to do those in the next day or two. Fry1989 eh? 20:42, 5 November 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Snow Lion Fenian: , done. I am not quite happy with the one with the leopards, but do not know how to make it better. Fry1989 eh? 16:44, 6 November 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Fry1989: No bother at all, what you've done is already terrific work. And thanks once again for taking the time to help out here, I do appreciate it a lot. Snow Lion Fenian (talk) 00:21, 7 November 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Fry1989: Hello again, and sorry for coming back so relatively soon after the last one, but I was wondering if you'd be willing to create another three (or at least as much of them as possible) TWOT related flags? It would definitely be a great help, as I'm doing my best to have most of the known flags from that series created over the next few weeks or so. But of course I'd understand if you can't. Snow Lion Fenian (talk) 14:48, 21 November 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I can take another look, but it will be a little while. My brain seems to be running on slow today. Fry1989 eh? 18:00, 21 November 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Fry1989: That's okay, and thanks for replying. Well, the particular three flags I had in mind are:
1) The "Flag of Far Madding", which is described in The Wheel of Time Companion, as "a blue field divided vertically in the center by an elongated red oval of even dimensions" with "a woman’s golden hand which was open, fingers up... on the side nearest the flagstaff" and "a golden sword, a simple straight blade and cross quillons, point upward... on the outer end of the flag." If you decide to do this, I've provided templates for the hand, oval shape and sword below.
2) The "Flag of House Caeren", which is described in Chapter 33 of Knife of Dreams as consisting of "a red star and silver sword" on a "black" background. You can see a coat of arms version here, and if you do end up taking this on, I'd recommend using the star template below. And regarding the sword, I'm sure one of the curved-bladed ones in this Category here would suffice for it, whichever you think is best, as I can't really decide myself.
3) The "Red Wolfhead Banner", which is described in Chapter 42 of The Shadow Rising, as consisting of a "red-bordered white banner... displaying a red wolf's head." An impression of the Banner can be seen as part of this illustration here. Now, if you do decide to do this, I'd recommend using the wolf's head provided in the image below. And, even though it's rather trivial, I'd also request that the file's title be spelt with capitals for the first letters in all three words, as that's how the flag's name is spelt in the novels themselves (as you can see on the Wiki page for it here).
And, of course, if you do take this on, I'd also ask for the flags to be created in the same size as you did the other ones.
Thoughts? Snow Lion Fenian (talk) 23:59, 21 November 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Fry1989: Superbly done as usual on all three fronts, and thanks so much for taking the time to work on these.

Though just one or two things; regarding the FM flag, perhaps the oval could be extended so that it touches the exact top and bottom of the flag (but without cutting off the oval's curves)? If only because the description states the flag is divided in the centre by the oval, which I've always taken to mean that the oval stretches the whole way across. But maybe I'm wrong. And, if the oval is enlarged, the hand and sword would probably have to be moved so that they're the same distance from the oval as they are now.

And, regarding the Caeren flag, is there any chance of the sword being given a more silvery hue? It just seems more white-ish in its current form.

But no offence at all, what you've done is still terrific work. Snow Lion Fenian (talk) 23:46, 23 November 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Fry1989: That's great, and thanks again for your help. I do appreciate it. Snow Lion Fenian (talk) 00:19, 24 November 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Fry1989: Hello (and sorry) again. I was wondering if you'd be willing to assist in the creation of another five (or at least as much of them as possible) TWOT-related flags for WC, as part of my plan of trying to have most of the flags from that series created over the space of a few weeks? Snow Lion Fenian (talk) 20:44, 4 December 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Snow Lion Fenian: You can post them here but I don't know when I will get to them, and you may want to ask others. Fry1989 eh? 20:03, 6 December 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Fry1989: No worries, that's fine. The ones I had in mind were:
1) The "Personal flag of Gawyn Trakand", which is described in The Wheel of Time Companion as "a charging white boar on the red field of Andor." If you do this, I've provided a charging boar template below, as well as the national flag of Andor itself, which displays the same shade of red as this one should.
2) The "Personal flag of Agelmar Jagad", which is described in The Wheel of Time Companion as "three running red foxes on a field quartered blue and white." I've provided an image containing a running fox below, if you do decide to try it, and I'd also ask that the blue be put in the first quarter.
3) The "Flag of House Norwelyn", which is described in The Wheel of Time Companion, as "a leaping silver salmon on a field of vertical blue and green stripes." If you end up doing this, I've provided an image containing a salmon below for use as a template. And I'd also recommend having the flag consist of five stripes (with the far left one being blue), if it's okay.
4) The "Flag of House Pendar", which is described in The Wheel of Time Companion as consisting of "three six-pointed golden stars, one above and two below, on a field of seven vertical red and white stripes." If you take this on, I'd recommend making the far-left stripe red, and also that this particular shade of red be used, if it's convenient.
5) The "Flag of House Anshar", which is described in The Wheel of Time Companion as "a running red fox on a field of gold or yellow." If you decide to try it, I've provided another image containing a running fox below for use.
And, as usual, I would recommend keeping them within the same size dimensions as the previous ones, if you do do them that is. Snow Lion Fenian (talk) 21:10, 6 December 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Fry1989: Great work on all files as usual, and thanks again for all your hard work. Much appreciated. Snow Lion Fenian (talk) 19:55, 11 December 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Fry1989: Hello again, so I wanted to inquire if you'd be willing to create SVG files of another two WOT flags? Obviously it's okay if you aren't, but I'm sure you'd be relieved at the fact that there's only two of them in this particular request? Snow Lion Fenian (talk) 10:18, 18 December 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Snow Lion Fenian: You may post them, but I will be a bit slow getting to them. Fry1989 eh? 18:07, 19 December 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Fry1989: That's perfectly fine. The flags in question are:
1) The "Flag of House Baryn", which is described in The Wheel of Time Companion as consisting of "a silver winged hammer on a field of green." If you do this, I'd recommend using the templates provided below (but with the hammer flipped horizontally, if that's okay). The shape of the winged hammer emblem can be seen in this COA rendition here, but as you can see, it uses the wrong colours (blue, black and silver), which I'd assume would be because that image dates from before the Companion book was released in 2015, which of course gives the correct colours (green and silver). But the shape itself seems fine.
2) The "Personal flag of Ingtar Shinowa", which is described in Chapter 46 of The Eye of the World, as "yellow... bearing a gray owl". Should you do this, I've provided an owl template for use below. And on that note, I'd recommend using a dark grey shade for the bulk of the owl, but a light shade of grey for the beak, claws and eye rings. Whichever two shades contrast best with each other in your own opinion.

@Fry1989: Superb flags as always, and thanks again. And before I go, I was wondering if I could inquire about the possible alteration of a certain already-existing WOT flag file on WC (not any of the ones you've done, mind you), as I feel that this particular one could do with being modified? Snow Lion Fenian (talk) 21:43, 21 December 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Snow Lion Fenian: Sure, go ahead. Fry1989 eh? 23:49, 21 December 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Fry1989: Thanks. The file in question is the Flag of Seanchan (below). What I had in mind for it was for to be modified to replace the 3D-looking lightning bolts with new 2D ones instead. As I do think that the 3D bolts look out of place with the 2D hawk.
And I was also thinking the formation of the three silver bolts should be changed as well, to make it look more like they're actually being held in the hawk's (lower) claw. Perhaps one pointing straight down from the claw, and one down-left, and one down-right?
(and full disclosure: I'm the one who requested the creation of the Seanchan flag for WC, over a year ago, although I never actually specified which lightning bolts the artist should use. So while it seemed fine at the time, in hindsight, I do think an improvement could be made. And the original artist seems to have vanished from WP, so asking them appears to be out of the question.)
Thoughts? Snow Lion Fenian (talk) 14:57, 22 December 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Snow Lion Fenian: I am sorry for the delayed response. I have been in a bit of a funk lately. I am afraid this one seems a little too tricky for me, so I will need to decline at this time. Fry1989 eh? 17:36, 28 December 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Fry1989: That's perfectly okay, and thanks for replying. Snow Lion Fenian (talk) 13:33, 29 December 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Fry1989: Hey, I was wondering if you'd be able to take on another two particular requests in this category? I do think you'd find these two files to be relatively easy to do. Snow Lion Fenian (talk) 21:43, 3 January 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Snow Lion Fenian: Alright. Fry1989 eh? 17:50, 4 January 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Fry1989: Thanks. The two files in question are:
1) The "Con of Talmanes Delovinde", which is described in Chapter 43 of The Fires of Heaven as consisting of three yellow stars on blue, as seen here.
2) The "Con of Dobraine Taborwin", which is described in Chapter 54 of Lord of Chaos as consisting of two white diamonds on blue, as seen here.
If you're wondering, a "Con" is certain type of flag assigned to certain people with the WOT universe, but not the same as a "Personal flag", which is a separate concept in this case. And if you do end up doing these, I would ask for them to be kept square-shaped, as seen in the links. Thoughts? Snow Lion Fenian (talk) 19:35, 4 January 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I will make them tomorrow. Fry1989 eh? 01:18, 5 January 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Fry1989: Nicely done on both files, and thanks. Although is there any chance that both flags could be made square shaped? I know most of the flag files within the WOT category aren't shaped as such, but square does seem to be the usual shape for Con in particular. But no offence. Snow Lion Fenian (talk) 18:30, 5 January 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Fry1989: Great job on both flags, and sorry for the delay in responding. Much appreciated as usual. Snow Lion Fenian (talk) 23:04, 7 January 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Fry1989: Hello again. I know it's been a while, but I just wanted to inquire if you'd be able to assist in the creation of another certain WOT-related flag, as well as in the modification of another already existing one? Snow Lion Fenian (talk) 18:36, 22 February 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Snow Lion Fenian: I'll see what I can do. Fry1989 eh? 18:34, 23 February 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Fry1989: Thanks for replying.
1) The flag that needs creating is the "Flag of House Bashere", which is described in Chapter 41 of A Crown of Swords as being "three simple red blossoms on a field of blue", with the flowers specifically stated to be "kingspenny" blossoms (a fictional flower from the WOT universe, as seen below). If you end up taking this on, I'd recommend using this particular shade of Ice blue here. Also, since there's no exact description as to what formation the three flowers are displayed in on the flag, I'd ask for them to be arranged in a horizontal line across the centre. And, of course, I would request for the flag to be kept within the 3:5 ratio, as per usual.
2) The flag that needs modifying is the Flag of the Children of the Light, displayed below. I'd like for the flag be changed so that a thin gold border is placed on all sides of it, preferably the same shade of gold as the sun itself (as the flag of the Children is specifically described in Chapter 25 of The World of Robert Jordan's The Wheel of Time as being "edged with gold"). If you do this, I'd recommend making the border the same size as that from the flag of the Band of the Red Hand below, another WOT flag.
Thoughts? Snow Lion Fenian (talk) 13:39, 25 February 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Fry1989: Superb job, and thanks for your help on both Files. Although, regarding the Children of the Light flag, is there any chance that the Sun on it could be slightly reduced in size, so that the outermost rays of the Sun are the same distance from the inner edges of the surrounding gold border as they were from the edges of the white field in the previous version of the File? Snow Lion Fenian (talk) 01:52, 26 February 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Fry1989: That's perfect, and thanks as always for your contributions. Snow Lion Fenian (talk) 20:15, 26 February 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Fry1989: Hello, me again. I know it's been quite a while, but I was wondering if you'd be willing to take on another request involving the creation of a WOT-related flag for WC? This one has only come to my attention relatively recently. Snow Lion Fenian (talk) 12:46, 20 May 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Snow Lion Fenian: Go ahead, although I'll be slow getting to it. Fry1989 eh? 19:04, 24 May 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Fry1989: That's perfectly okay. Well, the flag in need of creation is the "Personal flag of Guaire Amalasan", which is described in The World of Robert Jordan's The Wheel of Time as being effectively the same as the so-called "Banner of Light" (another WOT flag) below, only with a blue background instead of a red one. Snow Lion Fenian (talk) 22:26, 26 May 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Snow Lion Fenian: See File:Personal flag of Guaire Amalasan.svg. Fry1989 eh? 16:00, 1 June 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Fry1989: That's great work, and thanks again for your time. Snow Lion Fenian (talk) 19:51, 1 June 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Emblem of Afghanistan[edit]

I have seen File:Emblem of Afghanistan.svg and back in 2015 you reverted someone's revision because it's not true SVG. That is correct however this one with "true" SVG is officially the old version of the Afghan emblem which was modified by the country in 2013 into what the other user made (https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/archive/1/1e/20150515212909%21Emblem_of_Afghanistan.svg). I don't know how SVGs work but is it possible for this image to be converted into a true SVG? Because after all the current file uses an officially outdated version of the country's emblem. --Weaveravel (talk) 19:55, 12 June 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]

The updated version was eventually created by User:Sodacan, in two versions.
Fry1989 eh? 22:36, 12 June 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Fry1989: Thanks. That's good. However there are lots of articles on cross-language Wikipedia that use the File:Emblem of Afghanistan.svg file, it's going to be very difficult and very long to update every single article/template on English Wikipedia let alone other languages. Wouldn't it be a good idea to copy File:National emblem of Afghanistan.svg to File:Emblem of Afghanistan.svg, and then use the older emblem version in a new file called File:Emblem of Afghanistan 2001-2013.svg ? This way the image would get updated everywhere globally on articles that use it (but I'm also afraid that it may wrongfully change on articles that are supposed to use the older emblem, how can we get around this potential problem? - one example I've found is the Emblem of Afghanistan article on Wikipedia ). --Weaveravel (talk) 18:02, 14 June 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Overwriting the file would probably conflict with COM:Overwrite, as it is a historical version. And as you mention, that would conflict where the historical version is supposed to be used. Manual replacement is not fun, but probably the best option. I can help with that a bit. Fry1989 eh? 19:30, 14 June 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I have made the manual replacements on the master articles. Fry1989 eh? 20:26, 14 June 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thanks for that. Can you list which master articles? So that I know what's been done and I can attempt to update what's left. I have just updated the image on Template:Foreign relations of Afghanistan. There's going to be many articles to update unfortunately (every province template too for example) and yes it's not fun but there's no choice. --Weaveravel ({{int:Talkpagelinktext} em where appropriate can now be done. Fry1989 eh? 16:21, 16 June 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]

}
) 20:56, 14 June 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Weaveravel: the main article page for Afghanistan and Emblem of Afghanistan on the various different language projects, except for one where some local user thinks the other version "looks better" so they're being stubborn. Also the Politics of Afghanistan sidebar. Fry1989 eh? 23:22, 14 June 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Fry1989: OK. I have realized something, that perhaps the older 2004-2013 emblem is not meant to be used purposefully in the vast majority of articles. In my view, only very few articles will actually use the old emblem, most notably Emblem of Afghanistan to show the historic emblem. If you look at the global file usage, that file is used in lots of articles of Afghan places, politics, templates, etc. that aren't meant to demonstrate something historic. I have also discovered that File:Coat of arms of Afghanistan.svg is used in many global pages, which redirects to the old emblem.
I therefore think we can try solve this by doing this:

What do you think of this plan? I think it's very good to solve this problem easily for Wikipedia globally, and like I said virtually all articles aren't purposefully meant to use the old emblem. --Weaveravel (talk) 12:38, 15 June 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Weaveravel: , I can rename the file. There will be a period of time where CommonsDelinker and GlobalReplace need to replace the old file name with the new one, and then after that we can work on further manual replacements of the old emblem with the 2013 emblem where appropriate. Fry1989 eh? 16:28, 15 June 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Fry1989: Let me know please which file you're renaming and when manual editing can begin. --Weaveravel (talk) 13:42, 16 June 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Weaveravel: , I have renamed File:Emblem of Afghanistan.svg to File:Emblem of Afghanistan (2004–2013).svg. I have ran GlobalReplace to replace the file name wherever possible, and believe that manual replacement of "Emblem of Afghanistan (2004–2013).svg" with the current emblem where appropriate can now be done. Fry1989 eh? 16:21, 16 June 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Fry1989: Thanks. I have no idea about how to use bots that automatically do this things so thanks. Is it OK now if I can now copy File:National emblem of Afghanistan.svg to File:Emblem of Afghanistan.svg? Or are only you allowed to perform it? --Weaveravel (talk) 16:57, 16 June 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Weaveravel: , File:National emblem of Afghanistan.svg cannot be renamed to File:Emblem of Afghanistan.svg because that file name is still used in a lot of instances which GlobalReplace was not able to update the change when I renamed the file. We will need to go through the global usage list and manually replace it with File:National emblem of Afghanistan.svg. Fry1989 eh? 18:30, 16 June 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Fry1989: What I actually meant is 1) redirecting File:National emblem of Afghanistan.svg to File:Emblem of Afghanistan.svg, 2) remove the current redirect of File:Emblem of Afghanistan.svg and upload the new emblem revision to this file. This will mean that everywhere with File:Emblem of Afghanistan.svg globally will make use of the new emblem, and only in the few cases with manual intervention we can change it to File:Emblem of Afghanistan (2004–2013).svg. --Weaveravel (talk) 20:23, 16 June 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Weaveravel: , I do not think that would be appropriate. I also would not have the admin tools required to make the redirect. Sorry. Fry1989 eh? 21:19, 16 June 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Fry1989: OK so how do we go ahead now, how can we solve the problem? --Weaveravel (talk) 20:32, 18 June 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]
We will need to go through the global usage list and replace it with the current emblem by ourselves. I will help do that on my spare time, but you may like to gain some experience doing that as well. Fry1989 eh? 00:13, 19 June 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]
OK. I've made replacements where necessary on English wikipedia, hopefully others can be done too soon. --Weaveravel (talk) 00:42, 21 June 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I will help on the other language projects in my spare time. Fry1989 eh? 16:01, 21 June 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]

COM:CROP would not apply here as the file shows a stub which never existed in reality. Beginning with the faulty extraction from the flag, the patchy image was missing the "black" layer. All following versions are also wrong as the mistake was never corrected. You see the proper version here.MaxxL - talk 20:34, 14 June 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Sodacan's uploads are the most accurate, but there is now a discrepency between File:National emblem of Afghanistan.svg and File:National emblem of Afghanistan (Black).svg from when S Group Coop changed the first image from gold to black. The years in Arabic characters under the mosque use two different characters. Also the rising sun and Arabic words above the dome have swapped places. Small modification to two Australia-NSW road signs[edit]

Hello. I have noticed a small error in two NSW road signs, R4-235 and R4-235-1. The non-standard school operating hours should be in red, not black. See this instance of R4-235 for what I mean. Thanks --DL6443 03:44, 10 July 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@DL6443: , interesting. I could swear it wasn't like that at the time I made the signs. TfNSW's website and PDFs are silent on the colour of the text, but do show the hours in a red broken border. Do you know if this is a new regulation? Fry1989 eh? 15:52, 10 July 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Fry1989: I don't know about that one. Every instance of R4-235 I have seen on the road has the hours in red. The particular sign in the link above has been like that with red hours since at least 2013. --DL6443 23:36, 10 July 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Greenland's Road Signs[edit]

Hello. You may not have noticed, but there are also road signs in Greenland. Can you upload diagrams of them? If you are still working on something else, add Greenland to your to do list, and we will be waiting. 96.230.30.209 02:32, 30 September 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Bhutan Air Arm roundel[edit]

Thank you for telling me about the alleged hoax roundels. The File:Bhutan roundel.png I drew 10 years ago doesn't have its source in a dodgy site. It is from an authoritative book: Jane's Aircraft Recognition Guide Fifth Edition. ISBN 978-0-06-134619-4 (in the US), page 522. Please forgive me for the delay in replying, I was not sure where I had stored that book and it has taken me a while to find it. Xufanc (talk) 15:08, 31 October 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Thank you for your response. I have no access to Jane's or C&M, and my knowledge is based mainly on photographic evidence. I hold no prejudice to the uploaders of the various images including yourself and am open to the possibility that some of them may be correct. Fry1989 eh? 15:23, 31 October 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]
If you wish I can send you a scan of the page showing the roundel via email. Regarding the air force this is what I found: The Bhutan Air Arm has no combat capabilities, and is used entirely for transport. India is the key supplier... Existing aircraft in Bhutan are Mil Mi-8 helicopters, Dornier/HAL 228, Beechcraft 200 and Pilatus PC-12... Xufanc (talk) 16:08, 31 October 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]

As traffic signs are partly your area... I thought you might be interested...

However, the scans of the diagrams here are in black and white, You don't happen to have color equivalents with the measurements on them? (Currently they've been patched using SVG versions as the diagrams are broadly the same as in later versions.)

(Aside: Getting a color scan of the 1964, 1975 and 1981 regulations on Commons would be awesome, Someone already uploaded a large set of images for the 1964 versions over on SABRE's wiki.) ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 09:31, 19 November 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]

The UK is a country I would like to work on, but it is a bit tricky since I am a perfectionist and the best quality diagrams made for use by actual sign production companies are under a paywall which I could never afford. It didn't used to be, so I think that's a rather nasty thing of them to do. That limits me to shapes I can actually draw myself, such as the crossroads sign. The warning sign for sheep on the other hand, I need to be able to download a drawing of the sheep symbol, and the versions in these publications are acceptable but not as good as they could be. Anything with words is also difficult because I do not have a proper copy of the Transport typeface.
In regards to measurements and colours, I would expect that those have remained constant since the inception of the TSRGD. Fry1989 eh? 15:51, 19 November 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]
You have access to the working drawings on gov.uk (https://www.gov.uk/government/collections/traffic-signs-signals-and-road-markings#traffic-signs-images-and-drawings) (which are NOT paywalled)? In many instances older (and recent worded signs) can be drawn, with selection of a nominal x-height, and interpolation of the rules in Chapter 7 of the TSM (https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/traffic-signs-manual).

See also: Category:Traffic Signs Manual (UK) and Category:Working Drawings for Traffic Signs in the United Kingdom. The Wayback machine has a reasonably full archive of the previous dft.gov versions from 2002.

The Transport typeface tiles are in a PDF working drawing. If you have inkscape and some patience they can be extracted from the PDF - ( This is essentially How I made - File:UK traffic sign 534.1(1981).svg by scaling the releavtn vectors from an OGL covered PDF. I didn't do them as text, but as the tiles directly :) ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 12:10, 20 November 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I'd be interested to know if the tsgrd.co.uk site has actual CAD drawings, or if what it's doing is just representing material that's already in TSGRD and TSM (and thus only linking to material that's already existing.) ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 13:31, 20 November 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Fry1989: The Sheep is S11 - See here - https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/traffic-signs-working-drawings-tsrgd-2002, for a full set of S drawings. Shouldn't be too hard for someone to pull them out in Inkscape and scale them accordingly. :) ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 13:44, 20 November 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Yes, I do have access to the working drawings and do still intend to use them in the future, it's just that the TSRGD web-app's drawings are superior. I do not recall if they have CAD drawings as well, as it has been several years since they put up the paywall. I would also like to work on the Welsh-language versions and thankfully the Welsh Government also has provided a list of working drawings, but again that is a bit of a struggle because of the Transport typeface. I find it a bit confusing because it is based on x-height, which I can't seem to quite wrap my head around. Most files for signs with words also do not have the letters properly encapsulated. New Zealand, which I am currently working on, makes it much more simple. They describe the overall height of the wording, and the text is encapsulated well so I only need to make very minor adjustments. Fry1989 eh? 17:33, 20 November 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]
There's a PDF of the adaptations made to Transport for the Welsh letters (see https://www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/working_drawings_for_traffic_sig) It's scans rather than digital though, so you'd have to redraw the glyphs manually. Do you have wikimedia e-mail enabled?, I might have a figure I draw on how to possibly make some of them. ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 19:30, 21 November 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I will also note - Category:Traffic_Signs_Manual_(UK)_(Chapter_4) and related which has the actual diagrams, in many instances all that needs doing is the clipping of the text caption from the bottom.

I also found [6] which was a consultation document for the 2002 era TSGRD. If you can get permission (or confirmation of OGL from the Department of Transport directly) for it's use, it should be feasible to pull at least some of the relevant diagrams out of the PDF directly. (Assuming they are not already present in the TSM images). Diagrams not directly in the set would of course need to be made up, but adapting from existing artwork is perhaps easier than starting completely from scratch. ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 10:43, 21 November 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@ShakespeareFan00: , yes I do have Wiki email enabled. The Welsh Government's list of working drawings is currently located here, btw. Fry1989 eh? 22:04, 21 November 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Traffic Sign DR's..[edit]

You got the notifications because you edited these last, The reason for the DR's is to do with accuracy concerns about the x-height, scaling and spacing rules. I can sometimes be a perfectionist as well. ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 00:50, 21 November 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@ShakespeareFan00: , whilst I don't mind the deletion of File:UK traffic sign 511(1981).svg since we have other drawings of this sign, I would oppose the deletion of the other three if there are not other drawings of them, despite any inaccuracies. Fry1989 eh? 17:32, 21 November 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Noted. The other context is F%C3%A6's comment in User_talk:Fæ#Traffic_Signs...., as the relevant working drawings do not necessarily say OGL in the document, and so far it's been taken on good faith that they were based on the source. My most recent attempt to get a proper OTRS for this wasn't successful.ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 19:01, 21 November 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]
You are of course more than welcome to make your own enquiries, Don't bother asking the DfT contacts about anything about UK traffic signs prior to 2002 though, they claimed they didn't hold any information that old when I asked them about 5 years ago, and it is unlikely they would have done subsequently. ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 19:07, 21 November 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I would imagine all signs (except a few maybe with copyrighted imagery like tourist icons) qualify under OGL. Fry1989 eh? 20:05, 21 November 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]

MUTCDC[edit]

Catalogue completed.

-- Denelson83 (talk) 10:52, 26 December 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hi. Per this link, it appears that the 30 km/h school zone sign used in Manly and Liverpool is numbered R4-230-1-2N. If it is possible, I believe the title should be changed to "File:AU-NSW road sign R4-230-1" or "File:AU-NSW road sign R4-230-1-2N".

On a different note, however, the colour of the "SCHOOL ZONE" title bar should be the same as R4-235, not the dark orangey-red it currently is. An instance of the sign in question on the road can be found here.

Thanks and Happy New Year from DL6443 23:30, 3 January 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Now that the 30 Zone versions have been standardised and published on the TfNSW website, I will make the appropriate changes in the coming days. Happy New Year to you as well. Fry1989 eh? 01:18, 4 January 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Oh, weird. Every instance of the sign I've seen has the orange title bar, not the yellow-green one on TfNSW's website. See two examples of signs I've personally seen while driving on the road in Manly and Liverpool. Again, I don't know what the actual regulation is here, I'm just offering my opinion here. Cheers DL6443 21:20, 10 January 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I did upload orange versions, but according to TfNSW that is only for non-standard hours like the 40 km/h limit. Fry1989 eh? 18:18, 11 January 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Angolan air force roundel[edit]

I'm working on a thing on Air Forces at the moment (not on Wikipedia) and I'm trying to track down the history of the Angolan roundel.

The one currently showing on the Angolan AF page is a version I'd not seen before - the black and red yin-yang with a yellow border.

The site you gave as a source (http://www.drareg.nl/Markeringen/ukusa/index.html) seems to have a dead link for the period 2011-2019, so I assume that's what was current given you made the image in 2017 - it looks like there's a new one with the national cog-wheel-and-machete image in the centre from 2019 onwards. Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be any way of contacting the chap to let him know there's a dead link.

Pretty much every other source I'd usually go to for this kind of thing hasn't been updated since before 2011, and details on African air froces are notoriously difficult to come by, so your roundel appears to be literally the only internet source for that particular version right now. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Brickie (talk • contribs) 12:49, 27 January 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]

So, uh, yeah. Possibly want to make the new one if you've got time at any point, though it seems like the web at large doesn't really care that much about the insignia of the Angolan Air Force...

--Brickie (talk) 12:50, 27 January 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Brickie: I was able to find a photo, and I believe this is one of the ones that was used on Drareg.nl, though I haven't checked it in a while. If you have a Facebook account, there is a group called Roundels of the World Air Forces which I would suggest joining, and it is run by the same person that has that website. I'll also try to make the new one. Fry1989 eh? 16:34, 27 January 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Cheers for the swift response. Ugh, I theoretically have Facebook but stopped actually using it a looong time ago. Perhaps I'll just lurk on incognito mode or something :)
It's not that I didn't believe you about the 2011-19 roundel, btw, I just thought it was interesting the way that these thigns go.

Please participate in the Universal Code of Conduct consultation on Commons[edit]

Hi,

Hope you are well. I have seen that you have recently active in Commons:Administrators' noticeboard/User problems. This page is currently the only page where user problems (conduct issues, and other unacceptable behavior, etc.) get reported.

I am working on facilitating the Universal Code of Conduct enforcement discussion on Commons which focuses users’ conduct. That is why I am inviting to participate in the discussion to give your valuable opinion.

You can do so by participating in the public on-wiki discussion on Commons: Commons:Universal Code of Conduct consultation. There are a few questions regarding enforcement you can answer. Please feel free to include anything you find relevant.

I also encourage you to participate in the survey: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeK7gTSZ2PSNiekEKPcC2UvnkJaQt8iVPWRXZbk27U9E8fOIQ/viewform

The survey has a different set of questions, and you can response to them anonymously. It is not a long survey and should take around 10 minutes to complete.

I want you to know that your input is very valuable and it will help to us better shape the UCoC enforcement pathways for our beloved Commons community. I hope you participate. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you! Wikitanvir (WMF) (talk) 08:34, 10 February 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]

What is the difference? See: File:Kołobrzeg - znak drogowy.jpg. —Iketsi (talk) 01:13, 27 February 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Iketsi: File:Znak A-24.svg warns all road users about cyclists, but File:Kołobrzeg - znak drogowy.jpg warns cyclists about tram tracks that they may slip over. The second category is for warning signs that point out dangers just to cyclists. Fry1989 eh? 01:26, 27 February 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]
|If Category:Warning road signs directed at cyclists implies – and is a subset of – Category:Cyclist warning road signs, shouldn't the latter be removed from File:Kołobrzeg - znak drogowy.jpg to avoid overcategorization? —Iketsi (talk) 02:34, 27 February 2021 (UTC) Never mind; I just noticed that this is because Category:Warning road signs directed at cyclists in Poland doesn't exist yet. —Iketsi (talk) 02:38, 27 February 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]

"<VERB/NOUN> prohibition signs" or "No <VERB/NOUN> signs"?[edit]

Per this edit, do you plan on harmonizing all prohibition sign names with the "<VERB/NOUN> prohibition signs" formulation instead of "No <VERB/NOUN> signs"? I don't have a strong preference for either one; I simply noticed while trying to move Parking prohibition signs to No parking signs in order to make it match other categories under by prohibited action and by prohibited object, and I want to make sure we are as consistent as possible. —Iketsi (talk) 20:30, 3 April 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Iketsi: I have been struggling a bit with the proper grammatical order for these categories. "No <VERB/NOUN> signs" works well with certain topics, such as No Parking signs, but it doesn't work as well for more complex restrictions, such as where vehicles are prohibited by their weight. "No vehicles by axle weight signs / No vehicles signs by axle weight" doesn't sound quite right, whereas "Axle weight prohibition signs" sounds better. I do believe there should be some form of standardisation, and placing the subject before the action seems to work better to me. But I am willing to let others form a consensus on what way is the right way, if you feel there should be a discussion about it. Fry1989 eh? 00:07, 4 April 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Iketsi: @Fry1989: I don't have strong feelings about this. In the process of searching for categories re. File:Genève-Servette HC-01.jpg, it seemed enriching to add the unusual Category:No fireworks signs , Category:No kick scooters signs and Category:No umbrellas signs. May be regarding the Category:Prohibition signs by prohibited object, the formulation "No <NOUN> signs" is better, straightforward? I'm happy with any improvements in consistency - and easy understanding of the logic for newcomers. --MHM (talk) 08:01, 6 April 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@MHM55: @Fry1989: We should certainly make sure that a "No <VERB/NOUN> signs" redirect exists for every category of this kind. Another advantage of "<VERB/NOUN> prohibition signs" is that it will be suggested when searching for "X prohibit..." (when thinking about either "prohibition" or "prohibited"). I say let's give it a try, and we'll see how it goes. —Iketsi (talk) 12:23, 6 April 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Ugandan road signs[edit]

I found the perfect source for some Ugandan road signs. Here: Ugandan Road signs — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kingwarnen (talk • contribs) 11:42, 27 June 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Also, Did you forget that you need to put categories for the Ugandan road signs? You should do it. Kingwarnen (talk) 02:14, 2 July 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Kingwarnen: I believe I have, or do you also mean the ones uploaded by มองโกเลีย๔๔? And whilst I know you had good intentions in creating User:Fry1989/Gallery/Road Signs/Uganda, I am not in a position to upload all of the Ugandan signs at this time. I also prefer not to include images by other users, unless I have altered them myself. Fry1989 eh? 15:38, 2 July 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Fry1989: Jeez, all I wanted is you to add all the Ugandan road signs, as well as the categories added to them. Kingwarnen (talk) 23:02, 2 July 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]
There's no need to react like that. I wasn't being critical. Fry1989 eh? 15:59, 3 July 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I would like you to help me with the Ugandan road signs. It doesn't matter which source is which. I'm a professional. Kingwarnen (talk) 00:23, 4 July 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Kingwarnen: I would like to upload all the Ugandan signs at some point. However, most of them appear to be derived from signs in the United Kingdom. I would like to do both together. In order to do that, I will need to purchase a TSRGD license which is £470, and for signs with words I will need to purchase the Transport typeface which is another £400. I plan on doing so, but I can't quite yet.
On another note, I am very happy to see you uploading signs as well. However, I have to ask about your sourcing for a few of them. File:Uganda road sign R00.svg does not appear in the manual that you shared with me, nor in the copy of the Highway Code that I have. File:2.5 Georgian road sign.svg does not appear on this Georgian Government website. I am also uncertain about File:Mauritius Road Signs - Warning Sign - Checkpoint.svg, File:Mauritius Road Signs - Warning Sign - Drawbridge.svg, and File:Mauritius Road Signs - Regulatory Sign - Priority road.svg. Fry1989 eh? 16:30, 4 July 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Fry1989: These Ugandan road signs that need sources as you mentioned are ones that are custom and should be used in the next version of the manual, I hope. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kingwarnen (talk • contribs) 17:41, 4 July 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Kingwarnen: I want to be friendly with you and work with you where possible, but we need to have reliability with our images. That means we can't upload fake signs, or fill in the holes by presuming what signs are missing as is the case with the Ugandan Traffic Signs Manual.
Please understand that this is not an attack on you. Most of your images appear to be either true or highly probable. For example, File:Hungary road sign B-002 (old).svg is not sourced, but since almost all of Europe used the circle & triangle design of STOP sign at one time, I would think it very, very likely that Hungary did too. But the signs that I have listed above, based on my experience and knowledge, are more suspect. Please help me, by verifying these signs and deleting the ones which can not be verified. Fry1989 eh? 17:26, 5 July 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Fry1989: You're kidding. Reliability? Is that all Wikipedia wants? All I did is uploaded the signs and now you want to help me to get rid of them? I'm worked my butt off so hard on these signs that need to be added in the future manual. I know it's not attacking but you're just ditching them off.
The signs you mentioned above are from the new Portuguese road signs manual in Portugal so look it up if you can.

Also:

These road signs are from Mauritius shown above. There's ways to put catgories of them like I did, not to delete them. --Kingwarnen (talk) 17:50, 5 July 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Kingwarnen: All I am asking is that the signs be verified. Thankfully, I have found a source for the Portuguese signs. In regards to Mauritius, I have had significant trouble finding sources of any sort, even for the signs that were already uploaded. The "Understanding Our Traffic Signs" PDF shows some, but not all. Mauritius is a small country, do they really have any opening bridges? The no explosives sign is a copy from Bangladesh, what source do you have for Mauritius also using that design? And what about File:UK traffic sign 557-2.svg, who proposed it? Was it the Department for Transport? Was it a local council? Please understand the difficult position I am in. Fry1989 eh? 16:34, 6 July 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Fry1989: You always care about things on Wikipedia that are true. I know Mauritius is just a small country. Besides, I need those signs to be put in the right categories. Not just only the source. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kingwarnen (talk • contribs) 19:24, 6 July 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]

We need your feedback![edit]

Hello. Apologies if this message is not in your native language: please feel free to respond in the language of your choice. Thank you!

I am writing to you because we are looking for feedback for a new Wikimedia Foundation project, Structured Data Across Wikimedia (SDAW). SDAW is a grant-funded programme that will explore ways to structure content on wikitext pages in a way that will be machine-recognizable and -relatable, in order to make reading, editing, and searching easier and more accessible across projects and on the Internet. We are now focusing on designing and building image suggestion features for experienced users.

We have some questions to ask you about your experience with uploading images here on Wikimedia Commons and then adding them to Wikipedia. You can answer these questions on a specific feedback page on Mediawiki, where we will gather feedback. As I said, these questions are in English, but your answers do not need to be in English! You can also answer in your own language, if you feel more comfortable.

Once the collecting of feedback will be over, we will sum it up and share with you a summary, along with updated mocks that will incorporate your inputs.

Also, if you want to keep in touch with us or you want to know more about the project, you can subscribe to our newsletter.

Hope to hear from you soon! -- Sannita (WMF) (talk to me!) 09:56, 2 August 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]

http://roadsafety.gov.mu/English/Documents/Road Safety/Traffic Signs/traffic-signs.pdf Plus, I found sources for:

https://www.mohalldrivingschool.com/en/facilities/traffic-signs For those:

Keep and place them as unsourced for now as you did with Singapore's road signs till we get the real source for those signs. Thanks Ipswichguy (talk) 19:33, 5 August 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Jamaica traffic manual[edit]

Regarding Revision #575728102, how did you come across the Jamaican traffic device manual? My Google-Fu has been no good locating it. If you'd rather not talk about it publicly, I could talk over email or Discord. –Fredddie 04:35, 6 August 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Any other countries would be welcomed as well. And just so we don't run into each other while editing, my interest is purely for route markers that can be used in articles. –Fredddie 04:44, 6 August 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Fredddie: Occasionally I sweep Google Search for traffic signs manuals. The copy I have from Jamaica I found back in 2014, and you can download it from my dropbox here. I do have quite a few other countries in my records. I'll go through them some time and see what ones may be useful to you. Fry1989 eh? 16:16, 6 August 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]
For what it's worth, I have documents from Argentina, Australia, Bangladesh, Brazil, Canada (heh), Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Czechia, France, Indonesia, India, Mexico, Nepal, Netherlands, Norway, Philippines, Portugal, Qatar, Spain, Turkey, and the Central American cooperative that puts out an MUTCD for all seven of those countries. –Fredddie 16:25, 6 August 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I have documents for most of those countries, but we may have different copies or some of ours might overlap. I have documents of varying quality for Albania, Andorra, Argentina, Australia, Austria, Bangladesh, Belarus, Belgium, Bhutan, Bolivia, Bosnia, Brazil, Brunei, Bulgaria, Cambodia, Canada, Central America (SEICA), Chile, China, Colombia, Costa Rica, Croatia, Cuba, Cyprus, Czechia, Denmark, Dominican, Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Estonia, Fiji, Finland, France, Germany, Ghana, Greece, Guatemala, Honduras, Hong Kong, Hungary, Iceland, India, Indonesia, Iran, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Jamaica, Japan, Jersey, Jordan, Kenya, Kosovo, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Macau, North Macedonia, Malaysia, Malta, Mauritius, Mexico, Moldova, Morocco, Netherlands, New Zealand, Nigeria, Norway, Oman, Pakistan, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Philippines, Poland, Portugal, Qatar, Romania, Saudi Arabia, Serbia, Singapore, Slovakia, Slovenia, SADC, Spain, Sri Lanka, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, Ukraine, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom, United States, Uruguay, Venezuela, Vietnam, Yemen, Yugoslavia, Zambia, and Zimbabwe (the Rhodesian era). Not all of them will contain what you are looking for though, and it will take some time to go through them. Perhaps we can do an exchange sometime. Fry1989 eh? 19:17, 6 August 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Sorry to dig up an old thread, but can you look up in your catalog and confirm that Moldova's route markers are basically identical to Romania's? I thought I had it a couple weeks ago but now I can't find it. –Fredddie 00:23, 31 October 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Fredddie: Based on the one document I have for Moldova, yes it appears that is the case. Fry1989 eh? 17:50, 31 October 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Even More Road Signs[edit]

Don't forget, Guatemala also has road signs, like its "rough road" sign, and a stop sign that says "alto". Chile also used fluorescent yellow-green signs, and there is a "bus stop" sign in the Maldives. You can even find road signs in Madagascar, like its "no parking" sign and its "road narrows" sign. Can you make vector images of these signs, too? 2601:18E:C300:84E0:CDA2:5158:F0CC:DF42 16:13, 8 August 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]

All this repetition without ever providing any evidence of your claims or even having the courtesy to respond and admit that you haven't any. Why can't you just give a straight answer. GPinkerton (talk) 18:14, 1 October 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]

 — Johannes Kalliauer - Talk | Contributions 10:41, 3 October 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@JoKalliauer: Guten tag.
1: The license can be changed to {{PD-shape}} or similar.
2: I sort the categories of my images based on a combination of importance and alphabetical. RUS 021 is part of a set of related images. Category:SVG regulatory road signs in Ireland and Category:Diagrams of prohibitory road signs of Ireland contain all the images that are part of this set. Therefore they are most important and placed first. Categories such as Category:Vehicles forbidden signs are for images that are not part of a complete set, but a selection of images from different countries that have the same meaning. They are of lesser importance. These lesser categories are placed afterwards and should be alphabetical.
3: I do not consider these templates important, but will not oppose the addition of them.
4: These images have exact specifications that are in millimetres, which is why I create them in that format instead of in pixels. Because RUS 021 is also the template image for all prohibitory signs in Ireland, I would appreciate if you revert the image back to my version in mm instead of px.

Sorry for writing in German, I thought you are a German-native-speaker; I think I mixed you up with someone else, I forgot to check your userpage.
  1. done
  2. Thanks for explaining, if you like and know more about it, please extend&correct User:JoKalliauer/Mass_editing#Reordering_categories.
  3. I understand your point, but generally if you don't understand them you should keep them as they are (in the case of this merge it was okay, since better to have no info, than wrong info)
  4. I kept my version, since it is 9.4 times smaller and the source-code is imho more clearly arranged. I added width="602mm" height="602mm", I hope that's okay and still full-fills all your requirements.

Category discussion warning

Diagrams of speed limit de-restriction road signs has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

Brazilian traffic signs[edit]

Hey! I see that you mentioned recently under § Jamaica traffic manual that you already have manuals for traffic signs in Brazil, but it was under a list beginning with "I have documents of varying quality", so I thought it wouldn't be too much of a hassle for me – as a Brazilian native – to give you some direct links and pointers that might be useful. If this is all irrelevant or unnecessary to you, please feel free to ignore it! Just thought it might help :)

There are 7 manuals regulating traffic signage, 6 of which are available directly on the government's website here (archived). They're the third through last link on that page, all starting with "Manual Brasileiro de Sinalização de Trânsito", volumes I–V + VII.

Volume VI hasn't been released officially (for some contrived bureaucratic reason), but you can find compiled PDFs of the latest draft (as of writing, it seems that it's a 2016 edition) here (archived), for example.

Since I see you've been doing traffic signs specifically, I believe most relevant to you would be Volumes I and II, which deal with "vertical" signage (i.e. traffic signs) of regulation (e.g. stop sign) and warning (e.g. school zone), respectively. Volume III might also be interesting, as it also deals with traffic signs, but it's mostly contextual-dependend (e.g. "Copacabana beach, 5 km") so I'm not sure how that would translate to example signs for Commons.

Volume IV deals with "horizontal" signage, so painted stuff on asphalt, which I figure is probably not so relevant. Volume V deals with traffic lights, which I also feel aren't as relevant to you from what I can gather. Volume VI (the "unofficial" one) deals with auxiliary signage (e.g. traffic cones), but it does mention warning signs for curves and whatnot (fig. 5.19), which I feel are relevant here. Finally, Volume VII deals with temporary signage, which seems to be mostly about painting signs orange and writing contextual things, so it kinda falls into the same issue as Vol.III.

Important to note that I have only a superficial understanding of what your intentions are, so take my suggestions with a grain of salt. Also, please don't take this as a request or demand for Brazilian signs – I just saw it on your to-do list, but have no short- or long-term expectations if you don't get around to it. Hopefully it's been helpful for you! :) Cheers! — Avelludo 04:48, 26 October 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Avelludo: Thank you for your assistance. As you mentioned, Brazil is on my list of countries to work on. Sadly, my list is quite a long one, so I am uncertain when I will get around to any particular country. On the positive side it does mean that I will have a steady stream of work for years to come. With the documents that you have linked, and the ones that I already have in my library, I will be able to do a great job with the traffic signs in Brazil once I am able. Italy traffic sign manual[edit]

Now I just need to find the correct Alfabeto Stretto font. LLMNARRO exists, but it's too bold. –Fredddie 17:30, 29 December 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]

When you use Image generation, you should know: normally it should be done with the script, (with User:Fry1989/common.js), which analyses the code and makes suggestions. Your SVG drawing seems always error-free, in this special case you can use a prepared tagging without check. You will just have to set when text (emdedded or pathed} is contained.
The topic for traffic signs is "v", the display will be "sign" and the category diffusion is ":Signs".

{{Igen|I|+|s=v}}Valid SVG created with Inkscape:Signs ← an overcrowded category

I would suggest that you subcategorize to families, e.g. your signs for India, Bangladesh, Mauritius etc. That is possible with the parameter sd and a value e.g. :Xxxx, -Xxx, _Xxx etc.

{{Igen|I|+|s=v|sd=_(India)}}Valid SVG created with Inkscape:Signs (India)

Another possibility is using |s:= instead of |s= where the display gets the value lcfirst, the category :ucfirst and an "s" added.

{{Igen|I|+|s:=regulatory India traffic sign}}Valid SVG created with Inkscape:Regulatory India traffic signs

With |su:= instead of with |s:= the lcfirst for the display is suppressed, e.g.

{{Igen|I|+|su:=India traffic sign}}Valid SVG created with Inkscape:India traffic signs

This may help you to get a useful category hierarchy. -- sarang사랑 09:01, 5 January 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Sarang: Thank you for the advice. I have sub-categorised several into Valid SVG created with Text Editor:Road signs (a pre-existing sub-category of Valid SVG created with Text Editor:Signs). Please let me know if it is satisfactory, or if you believe there is a better way. Then I will also apply it to the images created using Inkscape.
I would also like to ask do you know of a template for dependent images? For example, File:Civil Ensign of Australia.svg is a dependent image of File:Flag of Australia.svg, so any changes made to Flag of Australia.svg should also be applied to Civil Ensign of Australia.svg. As former British colonies, many road signs in other countries are identical to the British ones, such as File:Hong Kong road sign 139.svg and File:Mauritius Road Signs - Information Sign - One-way traffic.svg being identical to File:UK traffic sign 652.svg, with the only difference being the colour palette. Such a template would be helpful so that if a user were to ever change the main image, they would know to also apply those changes to the others. I seem to remember seeing such a template many years ago, but can not find it now. Fry1989 eh? 19:42, 5 January 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
It is always a good idea to subcategorize, if there is (or will be) a certain number of files for such a subcategory. But please, never set a Category:Created with manually !
Any category "Valid SVG created with" (or "Invalid SVG created with") should only be done with one of the Created with ... templates and under no circumstances by hand ! Your two Russian road signs which you put to "...created with Text Editor" are neither created with text editor nor with Inkscape-hand but with pure Inkscape. I corrected these wrong assignements. In their special case, very small hand-drawn signs had been replaced with Inkscape-drawn images, enlarging e.g. 5.10 Russian road sign.svg more than 6 times from 689 to 4364 bytes without need. IMHO such simple images should not be drawn using Inkscape, it is very easy to draw them with a text editor ("by hand") avoiding the useless garbage of Inkscape code. Hand-drawn images should never be replaced by tool-drawn graphics, if you think that it is justified to make such a large-sized image, and you think that it is justified to replace a hand-drawn one, you should also assign a new {{Image generation}} run to update with the new tool and other properties.
About dependencies, I do not know such a template, but I will think for a solution. -- sarang사랑 07:37, 6 January 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
As an example, I drew the easy 5.10 Russian road sign.svg and displayed the source code in the file description. Because I didn't know the construction rules it may lack of accuracy, it is just a copy of the Inkscape version.
@Sarang: I am sorry for the confusion, but the two Russian images were already in that category. I did not add them myself. A template for dependencies is also not super important, it is just something I had wondered about for some time. Since you have not provided any criticism of my choice to use {{Igen|T|+|su:=XXX road sign}}, I will presume that is acceptable. Thank you for your assistance. Fry1989 eh? 17:33, 6 January 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hello. Why do you delete the images of the road signs in the subcategories of Category:Road signs in Belgium by number? These images are very convenient to identify immediately which road sign is the subject of each category. BrightRaven (talk) 16:30, 3 March 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

You also deleted the defaultsort keys. These keys are necessary to sort the categories in the right order. (For example B7 should appear before B11, not after B23). BrightRaven (talk) 16:35, 3 March 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
By using the sortkeys to make the sign itself the first image in the category, there is no need to also use a thumbnail of the image. See how File:Belgian road sign B1.svg is now the first image in Category:B1 (road sign, Belgium) that anyone will see? Messing up the numerical sorting of the categories was an unintended mistake. Special:Diff/656882607 — as you know, the first letter of a wiki page name is always capitalized, and in this particular "Km" and "km" are different things, with the former being a typo of the latter, and categorized as such. Linguistic discrimination[edit]

Hi Fry1989, I saw you reverted a number of category edits related to Linguistic discrimination [9] [10][11]... The issue is most of these files are not inherently Linguistic discrimination related. Categories need to be straightforward concepts, but when I saw them I could not guess why there was discrimination, and still cannot see.

I am not alien to the topic, but from a traffic sign with smaller English print I cannot deduce immediately there is any discrimination against English, let alone when it is the hegemonic language in the world. Description does not clarify anything either. The category just does not belong there. Although there is clearly propaganda here, I cannot conclude in the slightest it is related to linguistic discrimination. So could you please remove the categories. Regards Iñaki LL (talk) 14:59, 9 June 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Iñaki LL: If I may explain the situation in Quebec a bit further, perhaps you will understand. There are two main forms of discrimination, hard and petty. Examples of hard linguistic discrimination would be the historical total bans in France against the Breton language and in Spain against the Basque language. Quebec has not outright banned the English language. Instead, they have regulated that on any public signage using the English language, French must come first and English must be only half the size or less of the French inscription. This is a form of petty discrimination. It is an attempt to make the preferred language appear more prestigeous, and make the other language appear undesirable, an afterthought, something to be avoided, as well as making it more difficult for speakers of that language to read the message than speakers of the preferred language.
In the case of the propaganda poster, it primarily relies on racial stereotypes, but it also uses the stereotype of broken English as spoken by Asian immigrants to the Americas. This is a less clear cut example than what is happening in Quebec, and may not fit the definition of linguistic discrimination, but I still believe its intention was to promote discrimination against Asians both racially and because of how they were perceived to speak. Fry1989 eh? 15:55, 9 June 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I may agree more or less w what you say, actually I do not on Quebec or the poster w the Japanese cartoonosh character. In fact you could apply that same hypothesis to many circumstances, e.g. the decision by Turkey's governmental officials to call officially Turkey always Türkiye. Now that does not mean a sign in the UNO displaying "Türkiye" can be categorized as Turkish ultranationalism, although you may well argue that is the case, but that is POV here. It needs to be straightforward, not an elaboration based on the image, which belongs to discourse. Iñaki LL (talk) 18:42, 9 June 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Iñaki LL: I have removed the propaganda posters, as I admit my view that they are linguistically discriminatory was on shaky ground. However, I have to insist that in the case of Quebec, there is a clear intent to discriminate against speakers of one language in preference for another. Surely we can meet in the middle? Fry1989 eh? 23:28, 11 June 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
The signs are your own view, and a very thin one. When I see the signs, I do not see a clear depiction of discrimination. What I see is there is certain width on the sign, and one requires more words, so the print is smaller. I could tell you hundreds or thousands of signs like that here in the Basque Country, with bold, large print for Spanish or French, and small, thin and/or italics print in Basque, with the Spanish or French inscriptions above. Some other times Basque is just omitted, even when required by law. In places where up to a pair of decades just about everyone spoke Basque, you could find Spanish/French-only signs, shall we categorize all these signs in linguistic discrimination? Historically all signs and text in the Basque speaking areas in French/Spanish could be linguistic discrimination. In fact many people did not understand them. Please remove them. Iñaki LL (talk) 08:17, 12 June 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Why did you delete this category? In this case, at least, that is exactly what the sign says; you substituted the more general Category:Truck warning road signs. - Jmabel ! talk 23:23, 11 June 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Jmabel: I viewed the category as less concise. The term "truck crossing" isn't used with one uniform meaning, unlike "pedestrian crossing". "Truck crossing" is often used at points where trucks enter, exit, or turn, not simply cross from one side to the other. But it may be re-constituted in the future in a more clear way.

ISO 7010 symbols[edit]

Hello Fry1989,

i see, that you make diagrams of road signs and flags in high quality, so i ask you the following: (sorry for grammatical issues) Many of the ISO 7010 (Worldwide safety symbols) are incomplete on Commons. There are many diagrams which exist, but a lot of diagrams are missing, especially the red fire and green rescue symbols. The ISO published very recently a new amendment for ISO 7010 which introduces 5 new symbols (https://www.iso.org/obp/ui/#!iso:std:85124:en). Can you please make all the missing symbols of ISO 7010 and upload them on Commons under CC0? They can be found trough the ISO Online Browsing Platform (https://www.iso.org/obp/ui/#home) and can be redrawed from there. Thank you! Maxi123ID (talk) 13:48, 13 August 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Maxi123ID: I am sorry, but I am not in a position to draw those images. To draw them, I require a construction sheet. If you do have a PDF with them in vector format, I can extract them. Fry1989 eh? 17:06, 14 August 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Sorry, i dont have neither the one nor the other. Maxi123ID (talk) 17:12, 14 August 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Fry1989: A other user has shown me a link to a document, which contains some of the signs in vector format. (https://d37iyw84027v1q.cloudfront.net/Common/ISO7010_Safetysigns_Guidebook_Europe_German.pdf) Can you extract them please? The borders of the signs should be equal to the signs, which already are on commons. And the licence MUST be CC0 or public domain. Thank you! Maxi123ID (talk) 20:04, 15 August 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Fry1989 can you also reupload the fire safety signs, which are already there? I think the quality of some of them is pretty low. Thank you! Maxi123ID (talk) 16:28, 17 August 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Maxi123ID: I will look into it soon, although it may take a few days. I am busy at work this week and have very limited time right now. Thanks. Fry1989 eh? 00:15, 18 August 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
OK, thank you! Maxi123ID (talk) 10:07, 18 August 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Fry1989 how do you extract vector graphics from PDF? I think it could be useful to me. Maxi123ID (talk) 17:58, 28 August 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Maxi123ID: I am sorry, but I have been very busy with work and haven't had time to do much of anything on Commons. If you would like to try extracting them and uploading them yourself, you can do so by downloading Inkscape and opening the pages of the PDF in it. You can then copy them and upload them individually. Fry1989 eh? 18:24, 28 August 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Ok, but do you think, there will be copyright problems if i upload them on commons? Maxi123ID (talk) 18:37, 28 August 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I have a new idea: i can redraw the symbols from the ISO website trough the functions of incscape. This will probaly not lead to copyright problems, because the graphics made through this way, will probably be slightly different. Thank you so much for your help. Maxi123ID (talk) 19:13, 28 August 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Fry1989 Hmmm... Seems to not work so good... I will wait, until you have extracted and uploaded them from the document. Make it, when you have the time for it. And sorry if i annoyed you :( Thank you. Maxi123ID (talk) 20:25, 28 August 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Maxi123ID: There does not appear to be a license specifically for ISO symbols, but I believe most of them would qualify as PD-ineligible because they are fairly simple. I promise that I will get to uploading them. Fry1989 eh? 15:41, 30 August 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Ok, thank you. You do a great work with signs! Maxi123ID (talk) 17:35, 30 August 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Maxi123ID: I am very sorry, things just have gotten in the way for some time now and I haven't been able to upload much of anything at all. It appears that Clemenspool has taken on this task, however. Fry1989 eh? 20:15, 13 November 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Yes, he is uploading the Files and I copy them into the article "ISO 7010" in the German Wikipedia. Maxi123ID (talk) 16:05, 14 November 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I am glad that they were able to do that for you. Once more, I am sorry that I failed to do so in a timely manner. Fry1989 eh? 18:50, 14 November 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
No problem. But thank you, that you kept it in mind. Maxi123ID (talk) 16:01, 15 November 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Missing signs in the Vienna Convention? (And road markings)[edit]

Hello Fry 1989,

i think, there are some signs missing in the collection of the signs of the 1968 Vienna convention:

If you are bored, you can make them. :) Thank you! Maxi123ID (talk) 17:05, 22 August 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

An old subject[edit]

Greetings friend!

I was wondering if we could revisit an old conversation we had (way back) about the Royal arms of Canada. Would it ever be possible to upload a version that could survive deletion? Sodacan (talk) 23:59, 29 August 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Sodacan: Hey! I'm happy to hear from you. You have a well-established artistic style all your own, and for that reason I am of the opinion that your works are sufficiently different and unique that they all pass the copyright test. I can't promise that there aren't some users that wouldn't try to push it though. You would always have my full support. Fry1989 eh? 15:47, 30 August 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Fry1989: Thank you for your support. I am always grateful for your help and work after all these years. Even though the possibility of deletion is real, I would still like to try uploading at least three versions of the arms of Canada (the 1921 version, the 1957 version and the 1994 version). The first two should be easy to defend, the 1994 is the most likely to be targeted. But it is also the version that would be the most beneficial to the project. --Sodacan (talk) 16:49, 30 August 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
And thank you to you as well. Your efforts are always appreciated here. Fry1989 eh? 18:02, 30 August 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thank you for your intervention. There will be a lot of resistance and strong opinion on this matter, I knew this going in, but I had to try anyway. Alas it might even be obsolete soon, with the new king likely to change all the crowns (National Post: Accession of King Charles III may mean new royal crests). I already have the other version ready (always prepared). If the change is true there are going to be a lot of changes to Commonwealth files. Sodacan (talk) 05:09, 17 September 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Sodacan: And thank you as well for your tireless efforts. I just honestly can't believe anyone would actually try and suggest your work is an exact copy. As for a change in crowns, it is a curious possibility. The CHA posted on their FB page that a change in the monarch's preference of crown would not mean a change of any of the Canadian coats of arms and badges. Although, if you ask me, it would be in poor taste not to respect such an indication. Part of me believes it is likely that the King will not though, not only to not rustle any feathers but also as a way of honouring the late Queen. Fry1989 eh? 23:40, 17 September 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I will have a look at the CHA's comments, that would be interesting. Sodacan (talk) 09:19, 23 September 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Sodacan: There is one other little thing I would like to suggest. It may be prudent to rename File:Coat of arms of Canada.svg to something slightly different, because it currently conflicts with the file name of the official rendition on several of the wikis, meaning it can't be used on them and instead links to the copyrighted version. Perhaps once the DR is closed (thankfully it appears to be going in your favour), we can consider it. Fry1989 eh? 12:56, 24 September 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Fry1989: I agree with a name change, I did not know that it would clash with the official fair use file on the wikis, otherwise I would not have moved it into that name. Any suggestions? --Sodacan (talk) 14:05, 24 September 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
The simplest option may just be to move it back to the original name you chose. Fry1989 eh? 15:45, 24 September 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Fry1989: Let's use the old name to go with all the housekeeping you have done (Thank you!). But we must wait? --Sodacan (talk) 09:51, 25 September 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Sodacan: I think we should wait until the DR for File:Coat of arms of Canada.svg has been closed. Another little issue is that we will have to suppress Global Replace, or it will conflict with the wikis that have the copyrighted version under the name "Coat of arms of Canada" and replace them with your file. Fry1989 eh? 14:53, 25 September 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Well, this certainly complicates things. It should be noted that none of the news articles I have seen so far have said anything about the choice of crown (other than mentioning a Scottish crowned version), and I would expect some sort of brief statement from the Palace about the Tudor crown if it truly is the King's wishes. If the UK starts making wider changes to various coats of arms and badges, and Canada does not follow suit, that will be awkward. Fry1989 eh? 13:07, 27 September 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Fry1989: The College of Arms says: "The form of stylised Crown used in His Majesty’s cypher is what is sometimes termed a ‘Tudor Crown’ and differs from the stylised Crown used by the late Queen Elizabeth II which, with its higher and dipping arches, was closer in form to St Edward’s Crown. It is envisaged that the form of the Crown seen in the new cypher will be adopted as the form used in representations of the Royal Arms and in Military and Crown Badges in the new reign.". So we some confirmation here, I won't do anything until each change is confirmed. With regards to CHA, I think they will make their own decision. If the change is accepted across the board then for sure the national arms of: UK, Canada and New Zealand will be different. I am also not quite sure what to do in regards to UK arms file, the current file (File:Royal Coat of Arms of the United Kingdom.svg), which is a featured picture and has its own history. The file should not be simply overwritten, it should be moved to Royal Coat of Arms of the United Kingdom (1952-2022).svg and a new version uploaded to take over its name. I might need help on this when the time comes. Sodacan (talk) 05:40, 28 September 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
The Original Barnstar
For your support over the years, I appreciate it very much. Thank you @Fry1989: . Whatever happens let's keep uploading. Sodacan (talk) 21:02, 12 October 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Sodacan: Grazie! Truly, that means a lot. On the subject of continuing our work, I have a possible little project that could use your assistance. The various flags of the lieutenant-governors of Canada are a bit of a jumbled mess at the moment. I have been wanting to bring them back into sync for a few years now but keep putting it off. Part of what has me holding back is the escutcheons, which are not my strength. If you ever feel like taking me up on it, let me know, and I'll prepare the sources and other information required and we can work on it together. Of course, I am sure you have other things on your checklist, so no rush. Fry1989 eh?
Sure thing! Since we already them, should not take long to go through them. Sodacan (talk) 07:53, 13 October 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Sodacan: Alrighty, well here goes. First the sources.
Now for what I am hoping we can achieve: I would like them to be identical once again; same blue background, same arc of maple leaves, same crown, same shape/size/position of the escutcheon, just obviously the different blazons. The basic shape (curved downward with a point, sort of a cross between "Heater" and "Old French") of the escutcheon on File:Flag of the Lieutenant-Governor of Saskatchewan.svg is good for me. They would all have an thin gold bordure. Some of them (Manitoba, Ontario, Prince Edward Island, Saskatchewan) also sometimes have a thin gold line separating the chief, but the others do not, so I would leave that to your discretion. For the crown, I am rather fond of the one used on File:Flag of Victoria (Australia).svg, but if you have a better version by all means don't let me hold you back. The Lieutenant-Governor of Nova Scotia still uses File:Flag of the Lieutenant-Governor of Nova Scotia.svg, but I have included them as they have adopted the new style at least as a badge. The badge of the Lieutenant-Governor of New Brunswick is slightly different, including the motto, but this is excluded on the flag. The arc of maple leaves doesn't really need any changes, but if you are so inclined, that is fine. The main thing I was hoping for is that the escutcheons would all receive your "special touch." If there is more information you seek, or points you wish to discuss, please let me know. Fry1989 eh? 16:43, 13 October 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Should I overwrite or update them anew? Sodacan (talk) 04:36, 17 October 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Personally, I would just overwrite the current files and then change the infobox information as appropriate. However, if you have a preference to upload entirely new files under your own licensing, that would be ok too. Fry1989 eh? 15:46, 17 October 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I finished one File:Flag of the Lieutenant-Governor of Saskatchewan.svg, (it should purge and the maple leaves should show up eventually). The rest should follow this one. Sodacan (talk) 16:22, 19 October 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Sodacan: It looks good. I am just slightly curious about the non-standard proportions. 1023.987 / 512.013 px is a little odd. I also expected that you would use your elements from File:Coat of arms of Saskatchewan.svg. But please don't take it as harsh criticism. Fry1989 eh? 16:52, 19 October 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Fry1989: , I fixed the flag ratio and based it on the GG's flag. As for the elements, I might just standardise what we already have. Vexillology is not like heraldry and can be very exacting when it comes to the depictions. So I might change some, but others I might keep what we already have. Sodacan (talk) 17:39, 19 October 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Sodacan: I thank you for your efforts, and even moreso for your patience with my nitpicking and high expectations. With the dimensions, I was just hoping that the shield could be drawn to a mathematically "normal" width and height. For example, on your latest revision it is 231.983w/291.127h. Because of these fractional measurements, it shifts slightly from side to side when doing the right-left flip of the image overall. If I may make the suggestion, the shield could be drawn to an exact width of 230.000px and height of 290.000px, with the bordure having a thickness of 5.000px, or something similar to that as long as it ended in .000 rather than fractions. That would make everything mathematically pure. I could then work on any centering or other minor alterations after you have finished the escutcheons, which is the main element that I cannot draw with any confidence whatsoever. In any case, please continue at your discretion and forgive me for driving you a little mad. Fry1989 eh? 14:06, 20 October 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

UK road sign colours[edit]

Hi, where have you sourced the colour palette you are using for the UK road signs? The colours, notably the blue, do not match the values used on the Government website (https://www.gov.uk/guidance/traffic-sign-images#colour-palette). Is there a reason for this? Nathan A RF (talk) 16:29, 23 September 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Nathan A RF: Hello. I played around with the values in Pantone/CMYK/RGB and found they gave wildly different results. What I chose to do instead was use the actual samples provided by DfT. It's not perfect, but I find it preferable to having to debate between choosing Pantone/CMYK/RGB. Fry1989 eh? 13:00, 24 September 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Fair enough, although it perhaps makes more sense to use the RGB values as the signs are only meant to be used online or printed on paper from the commons. I recommend altering the blue at least, it looks way too dark compared to actual signs. Nathan A RF (talk) 19:39, 24 September 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I understand the concern, and don't necessarily disagree. It is something I will have to look into. Now that I have a better job (more disposable $$$), I intend to buy a license for the TSRGD and Transport typeface at some point, and then I can work on all the signs so they will be uniform again. To be fair, I perhaps should not have made any changes until I was able to do so to all the files. Fry1989 eh? 22:05, 24 September 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Ratification of the Vienna Conventions[edit]

Uganda has ratificated the Vienna Convention on Road Signs and the Convention on road traffic.

Can you please update the both overview maps?

Thank you! Maxi123ID (talk) 07:02, 9 October 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Ethopia, Oman, Liechtenstein, Honduras, Benin, Palestine, Myanmar, Thailand also have ratified the Treaty on Road Traffic since 2018. The Map seems to have been very rarely updated since 2018... Maxi123ID (talk) 11:49, 15 October 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

A barnstar for you![edit]

The Original Barnstar
I admire your work, it is really phenomenal, I am writing to you in order to ask you to create some historical and governmental flags of my country, such as the current presidential flag, the presidential flag used between 1861 and 1890, among others.

I look forward to your response. AlexExpensive (talk) 20:09, 25 October 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Duplicates[edit]

Hi Fry1989. FYI, files of different types "are not duplicates, but instead possibly redundant... and require a deletion request" (COM:Dupe), so they should not be tagged with {{Duplicate}}. Best, —‍Mdaniels5757 (talk • contribs) 18:43, 30 October 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

This isn't an issue of redundancy, it's an issue of duplication. When a user takes one of our existing images and uploads it in a distorted or inferior format, they are duplicating the pre-existing image. It qualifies for speedy deletion for that reason, and going through the process of a DR is a waste of time and resources. Fry1989 eh? 15:09, 31 October 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Mdaniels5757: You need to understand something. This is literally what I was told to do!! I used to nominate these files for deletion the way you insist all the damn time, and I was told just to use the duplication template because it is faster, easier, and these are unaltered exact copies of pre-existing images on Commons. And for a long time before you came along, it was accepted, and the files were deleted accordingly. If you don't like it, have a discussion with your colleagues and figure this out amongst yourselves and come back to me with a uniform position. Otherwise, stop following me around, and let someone else deal with these duplications, which is what they are. I am not switching the way I do things back and forth and back and forth to please every different admin that comes along as has a different interpretation. Fry1989 eh? 14:21, 6 November 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

[edit]

@Fry1989: Hello again. Sorry for this random incursion, but I just wanted to ask if you'd be willing to take on a certain request of mine in the WP Graphics Lab (specifically this one here)? As you can see, it involves creating an SVG file of the banner of the Earl of Mount Edgcumbe. And given that you've already created SVG files for four other banners of British Earls (namely Bathurst, Spencer, Hardwicke and Strathmore and Kinghorne), then I thought this one might interest you as well. But of course I'd understand if you can't? Snow Lion Fenian (talk) 22:46, 25 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I will look into it. Fry1989 eh? 19:36, 1 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Fry1989: Thanks for replying! Although I just thought I should inform you that FOX 52 has now completed the request since I asked you about it, so there's no need for you to busy yourself. Sorry about this, and thanks anyway for your interest. Snow Lion Fenian (talk) 15:20, 5 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Ok then. Sorry I was not up to the task. Fry1989 eh? 18:58, 8 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Renaming "File:Flag-map of Syria (1946-1958, 1961-1963).svg" to "File:Flag map of Syria (1930-1958, 1961-1963).svg"[edit]

The flag may have been adopted in 1930, but the territorial boundaries shown on the map were not established until 1946 or thereabouts, so the new name could be confusing. AnonMoos (talk) 18:53, 14 February 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@AnonMoos: That is a legitimate point. However, I have had very limited time to edit on Wikimedia the last few months, as well as a general lack of focus and motivation, so it's not something I had considered. Fry1989 eh? 21:19, 24 February 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

LGBT rights in Kurdistan[edit]

Hi Fry1989! How are you? Hope you're fine :) I'm a fan of your maps covered in LGBT flag and wanted to ask you if you could be so nice and create one for Kurdistan too. There is a Kurdish article about "LGBT rights in Kurdistan" (Kurdish dominated regions) and I don't know how to create such a wonderful map like that: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:LGBT_flag_map_of_Turkey.svg The Kurdish Wikipedia community will be thankful for your help! Greets --Ferrus (talk) 19:28, 12 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Ferrus: Let me apologise for my very delayed response, I have a terrible memory. Do you desire one for all the Kurdish-inhabited regions, such as File:Kurdish-inhabited area by CIA (1992) box inset removed.jpg? If so, I will require an SVG map covering the whole area. Fry1989 eh? 19:03, 19 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Hi @Fry1989 - thanks for your response! Yes, that would be awesome! :) I have tried something but it's not an SVG map, so I'm really looking forward for your SVG - thanks in advance! Ferrus (talk) 20:21, 23 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I will see what I can do and then let you know. Fry1989 eh? 23:29, 23 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Ferrus: I have created File:LGBT map of Kurdistan.svg. Unfortunately, there are not many SVG maps of Kurdistan to choose from. I hope this is acceptable. Fry1989 eh? 20:24, 26 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Replacing the Emblem of Vietnam[edit]

Hi, since you are the last one who has engaged with File:Emblem of Vietnam.svg and also an authorized file-mover while Wikipedia is being idle on processing Commons' protected files, I think that you are the only one that I know to contact for a change a.s.a.p.Being a Vietnamese citizens who have been spending months studying about the Vietnamese emblem and was able to find most of its original documents and contrustion sheet, I have concluded that the current emblem(s) of Vietnam (and North Vietnam) which are being used on Wikipedia are inaccurately illustrated. Those include the inaccurate position and design of the wheat, the lower platform, and the star's lighting effect. Recently, with all of the documents and evidences found, our member User:MingoBerlingo have rendered new Vietnamese emblems which are surely better interpretated that the ones that are being used. By that, I am requesting to replace File:Emblem of Vietnam.svg by File:Emblem of Vietnam (fixed for revision).svg and File:Emblem of North Vietnam.svg by File:Emblem of North Vietnam (fixed for revision).svg (with the North Vietnamese emblem, merging the two files would not be a bad option).
The thread that we have discussed and providing documents about the emblem can be found here.Thank you for any future response, any possible assistance & intervention. Hwi.padam (talk) 14:31, 20 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Hwi.padam: Hello. File:Emblem of Vietnam.svg is currently overwrite protected. It will require a formal request either for removal of protection or for an administrator to upload the latest version of File:Emblem of Vietnam (fixed for revision).svg. File:Emblem of North Vietnam.svg does not appear to be protected, so any user may overwrite it with the latest version of File:Emblem of North Vietnam (fixed for revision).svg. Fry1989 eh? 16:44, 23 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I understand the SRV case, however, do you have the priviledge to merge the two DRV emblems file and adopting the final version to be used for every page? I don't know if there's supposed to be two versions parallely existing. Hwi.padam (talk) 03:33, 24 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Hwi.padam: I do not, an administrator is required to perform a merge. A request can be made at Commons:History merging and splitting. Fry1989 eh? 20:25, 24 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

User Wieralee declined my requests to rename image files of Ukrainian road signs.[edit]

Hello. I'm here again. Recently I sent a request to rename image files of Ukrainian road signs File:5.57.1 Ukraine road sign.svg, File:5.57.2 Ukraine road sign.svg, File:5.57.3 Ukraine road sign.svg and File:5.64 Ukraine road sign.svg. But unexpectedly the user @Wieralee declined my requests to rename these 4 files, citing that they "do not comply with renaming guidelines". For some reason, he also refers to the road signs of Finland, France and Estonia, in which he sees the full name of these three countries in the file names of road signs. I believe that this user was wrong, and he used the wording about non-compliance with the renaming rules for his own personal purposes. In Commons:Village_pump/Proposals#File_names_of_road_sign_images I tried to explain his wrongness and got the following delusional answer:

I looked into the upper Category:SVG road signs by country for France, Finland and Estonia and I saw a format: "France road sign B30 (30).svg, "Estonia road sign 721d.svg", etc... and I realized that WWBM is trying to provide a new format for all road signs. This entails thousands of rename requests across hundreds of folders... without any discussion... just because "his format is better". So I've declined.

Dear @Wieralee, so what's the problem that I want to create a new road sign image file naming system where file names of road signs start with the ISO 3166-2 two-letter country code? I really didn't come up with it. For example, I went to the SVG road signs in the United Kingdom category and the filenames here start with the letters UK, as that's the common abbreviation for the United Kingdom and the ISO 3166-2 two-letter country code. Moreover, the use of ISO 3166-2 codes in file names makes it possible to shorten them, especially in situations where country and territory names are very long.

@Fry1989, can you explain him what's wrong with Wieralee's arguments? WWBM (talk) 20:08, 31 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

About Xasartha[edit]

Hey, I heard that you were deleting a lot of files from the user Xasartha. She resigned because of you. I am recovering most of the files that you recently deleted from Xasartha. Flag Creator (talk) 17:10, 2 April 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Looking at the user history, we're talking about 2014, so nearly 10 years ago. At that time, I nominated a number of their files as copyright violations. It is unfortunate, but if I hadn't, someone else would have. Fry1989 eh? 23:49, 2 April 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Can I atleast post the deleted files then make them high quality and uncopyrighted? Flag Creator (talk) 09:40, 3 April 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I do not know. That depends on various factors such as the complexity of the flags. Fry1989 eh? 20:19, 12 April 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Chilean road signs[edit]

Hello Fry,

together with a few other users, I have expanded the article about the Chilean road signs in the German Wikipedia. In doing so, I have listed all traffic signs from the Chilean Highway Code. Since there is no SVG file for most of the signs yet and I have seen that you have drawn a lot of road signs, I wanted to ask you if you are interested in creating an SVG image for the remaining signs as well? I have already created some warning signs for road construction sites ("Señales de Advertencia de Trabajos") based on your work. All I had to do was changing the background color. See: Category:SVG warning road signs of Chile. In its catalogue of road signs, the Chilean ministry of transport provides very precise instructions for drawing each road sign. See chapter 2, 5, 6 and 8. Unfortunately, unlike you, I have no idea how to use Inkscape. If you are keen on drawing a few or even all of the missing traffic signs, I would be very grateful!

Kind Regards, --Siegbert v2 (talk) 10:20, 25 April 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Siegbert v2: Thank you for dropping by. Chile is absolutely a country which I intended to re-visit, both to improve the existing files and add the newer signs that did not exist at the time. Sadly, these last few months, I have lost a lot of motivation and have been barely uploading. I should start doing so again, but since I have a rather extensive list of countries to work on I suffer not only from a lack of motivation but also the choice overload paradox. That said, Chile might be a good way to start "working" again. I will try again in the coming days. Fry1989 eh? 19:45, 25 April 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thanks for your quick reply. Take your time. There is no hurry. The important thing is that you are doing well and having fun! Siegbert v2 (talk) 10:58, 26 April 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Road signs in Bulgaria[edit]

Hello. I'm here again. This time I started creating images of road signs in Bulgaria. Unfortunately, Wikimedia Commons has very few SVG images of road signs in Bulgaria. Moreover. I'm still not able to find a Cyrillic version of SNV typeface.

Recently, I started creating missing images of road signs in Bulgaria and I name files like this: BG road sign Т2.svg. BG is the two-letter ISO 3166-2 code for Bulgaria.

I tried to request renaming files with Bulgarian road signs from Bulgaria road sign XX.svg to BG road sign XX.svg but the user @TommyG has declined my request. Should we replace Bulgaria with BG in file name images of road signs to make them more shorter? WWBM (talk) 12:24, 12 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Is there a specific need for the road sign files all to be named according to your preferred naming convention? If you wish to change the naming scheme of a large set of images, you need to be able to point to a reason why this should be done, other than that your preference is to use the ISO two letter country code , while others have used the full country name. TommyG (talk) 12:57, 12 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@TommyG: Yes, there certainly is a benefit. A common naming convention is actually something I initiated quite a few years ago, after proposing it on the Village Pump and facing no opposition. The first benefit is that the images will naturally sort themselves alphabetically into categories without the need of sortkeys. The second is that when used on projects, having a common name for a group of files has always been deemed preferable as it reduces workload. Third, although my initial proposal was to use the country name in the English language, I subsequently changed it to the ISO code as that is language-independent and universal. Suffice to say, this is not something started by WWBM but by myself, and therefore I would appreciate that you direct further questions or disagreements about it towards me, rather than with WWBM who is simply trying to help.
@WWBM: I also have been unable to find a Cyrillic version of the SNV typeface. User:มองโกเลีย๔๔ would appear to have one, which I asked about roughly a year ago, but received no response. Fry1989 eh? 15:23, 12 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Well, since there's no reference to this discussion in any of the relevant pending rename requests , do you have a link to the discussion? It seems a bit strange to start changing a fairly consistent, existing naming schema, in favor of another naming schema. If there is already a fairly consistent naming as in f.ex Category:SVG information road signs of Azerbaijan, changing the schema for another as in File:5.48.2 Azerbaijan road sign.svg seems like a lot of pointless work. TommyG (talk) 15:54, 22 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
As this was many, many, many years ago, no I do not just have a link to the discussion available. But at the time I made the proposal, there was not any sort of uniformity. The signs in the former Soviet countries tended to be named "0.00 Country road sign", those in the UK were (and still are) named "UK traffic sign 00", those in Poland were named "Znak A-0", those in Italy are named "Italian traffic signs - Italian-language name" (as I have yet to find any letter or number system for Italy), those in the Netherlands are named "Nederlands verkeersbord A0", those in Norway were named "Norwegian-road-sign-000", those in Hungary were named "KRESZ-0", and when I first started uploading images of my own I named them "Country A0." Now, as I said, I am open to any sort of modification to the naming convention, and if you have a better one, I am entirely open to hearing it, but there was no consistency before I came along and I will argue very strongly that it is something we should continue to enact. King's Colour for the Royal Navy[edit]

@Fry1989: Hey there. Sorry to disturb, but I just wanted to draw your attention to a certain request of mine in the Commons:Graphic Lab/Illustration workshop, specifically this one here. It involves updating the existing "King's Colour for the Royal Navy" file so that Charles III's cypher is in the centre. UK Road Signs[edit]

Hello, I'm wondering if you are doing the Motorway signs for the UK?

If so when you do it, is it possible to have a specially modified one created, along with a couple of new ones that don't seem to have ever made it to commons?

For https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Logo_sign#In_the_United_Kingdom I have used two images from dashcams to illustrate the point but as other articles (and the US in the article) use SVG's

Basically I would like a separate modification of this https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:UK_traffic_sign_2917.svg to look more like this https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Motorway_services_sign,_M40_-_geograph.org.uk_-_2460991.jpg with the real text brand names on.

And if possible a recreation of this https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Lancaster_Services_Sign.png - the US SVG uses real logos https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Logo_Sign.svg

Honestly I'm surprised these haven't been asked for before, those types of signs have been around since 2011. They were officially added to the spec in 2013 after a trial period

https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/346336/Guide_to_the_Signing_of_Roadside_Facilities_for_Motorists_-_September_2013.pdf

https://www.whatcar.com/news/motorway-service-station-signs-to-change/n8371

In fact according to this, the old services sign with knife and fork, fuel symbol are now illegal on the motorway and must be replaced https://twitter.com/mwayservices/status/1346028848824123393 - I could be wrong but I don't believe there is a version of that old services sign on commons either,

This is what the pre-2011 sign looks like https://trafficsigns.co.uk/road-signs/motorway-service.jpg and it is still in use for the A-Roads https://c8.alamy.com/comp/B4D93J/sign-showing-distance-to-scotch-corner-services-on-the-a1-with-facilities-B4D93J.jpg, though the background is white (see the September 2013 pdf and scroll down to 'Trunk Road Service Areas'. There is also a black variant for Motorway truck stops, though I'll leave it up to you if you want to recreate that.

There is also this 'Tiredness Can Kill' sign that they also place before Motorway services https://motorwayservices.uk/wiki/images/f/f4/Tiredness_can_kill_sign.jpg, again, not sure if it is in the TSGRD though the sign has been used since the 1990's.

With those 3 I will add them to this article https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motorway_service_area TIGHazard (talk) 08:35, 18 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@TIGHazard: Greetings. I am sorry, but I am not in a position to work on further British road signage at this time. I can inform you when that changes in the future. Fry1989 eh? 21:54, 18 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
No worries, it's not urgent. It's just that I feel those signs would be better illustrated with SVG's in the future. TIGHazard (talk) 09:29, 19 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Shade of blue for Irish road signs + creating missing signs[edit]

Hey, it's me again. I'd like to thank you first for helping categorise the Moroccan road signs I uploaded. As you would've seen, I've begun getting used to the workings of vector graphics via Inkscape. While I of course still have a lot to learn, I would still like to help out improving existing SVG road signs, such as improving fonts and colours. One of these things is improving the shade of blue for Irish signs (such as regulatory signs). Right now I find them to be much too dark (I believe the colour originated from that used in the RSA Rules of the Road?). I used a lighter shade for directional signs which I am quite fond of (e.g. File:IE_TSM_Ch_2_Fig_2.4.35.png), the colour being similar to the tunnel sign you made, but of course I would like to ask you for your opinion given that the majority of them are your work. Maybe you might find another shade more suitable, and I would gladly update my own works if this is the case.

I'd also like to update some existing signs you made according to the working drawings (e.g. File:IE_road_sign_P-010.svg and File:Ireland road sign P 001.svg), as well as uploading missing warning and roadworks signs and replacing my PNG additional signs with SVG (if I can manage to do so). Just letting you know, in case you have any objections or advice. Thanks :) EthanL13 (talk) 15:20, 24 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@EthanL13: Hi there. I apologise for my slow response. As I get older, I find alot of my motivation has dissipated. You are certainly welcome to jump on board with the Irish road signage. The colours, including blue, have always been a bit tricky, since the Department of Transport does not provide specifications unlike their British counterpart. I see no reason not to adopt the same blue as from W-162. Any other signs that you feel you can make better, or missing ones that you can upload, are also welcome. I've been putting off the textual signs until I am able to purchase a proper copy of the Transport typeface, something that seems to constantly get pushed back again and again. Still, with the Gaeilge text being slanted, I'm not even certain how to approach that. Fry1989 eh? 23:44, 27 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
No worries at all Fry. Yes it is indeed unfortunate that their are no official colours, but instead they make use of saturated colours which is hard on the eye. I'll try my best to change. improve and add these signs, hopefully without screwing things up.
As for the oblique Irish text, I wonder if skewing the regular Transport typeface (free or purchased) to 15 degrees and simply placing in the unique Irish characters as well as the acute accent, where needed, might suffice? And for any condensed text it simply requires squashing the text to the appropriate percentage outlined in the drawings, as is done officially.
I hope you find your motivation again soon. :) EthanL13 (talk) 11:58, 28 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Hi @Fry1989, I have just uploaded a character set of the Irish font. This might assist you, when you find motivation again. EthanL13 (talk) 13:16, 5 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Road signs in Belarus[edit]

Hello again. Recently I started creating vector images of road signs in Belarus. The fact is that road signs in Belarus are a bit different from the Russian ones. I consulted with a company that manufactures road signs in Belarus and found out that Russian road signs do not meet the Belarusian standard STB 1140-2013, since the country has its own standard for road signs, which differs from the Russian GOST R 52290-2004.

Some time ago, the English-language Wikipedia had a single article about road signs in Russia and Belarus, but then I perfectly understood that a separate article about road signs in Belarus was needed - I wrote about this in the discussions of the article back on June 13, 2022. Even then I realized that Belarus has its own road signs that are not found in Russia, i.e., there are road signs that are specific to Belarus. I actually did just that a few days ago: I created the article Road signs in Belarus. How do you like my new article and images of Belarusian road signs I created? New British signs[edit]

Hi, I have a few signs I've made in Inkscape using working drawings. I thought it might be helpful to upload them to the commons but not sure if you have any conventions given you've uploaded/modified quite a few of them. I just uploaded a corrected sign here to give an example: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:UK_traffic_sign_784.1_(2002).svg. Let me know what you think. @Arbalete: Because File:Italian traffic signs - segnale fine autostrada.svg and File:Italian traffic signs - fine autostrada (figura II 346).svg are different. They should not be made the exact same. If one is incorrect, it should be replaced with the official design on the pages where it is used. Fry1989 eh? 14:50, 11 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
No, actually only one signal exists. That's why I overwrote both of them and now they look the same. Of course the two files should be unified now, how can I do?--Arbalete (talk) 19:39, 11 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Anguilla flag[edit]

According to CRW Flags, the gold border in the shield was removed from the flag by 1999. The Flag Institute shows the same flag The Flag Institute is "an adviser to the UK Parliamentary Flags & Heraldry Committee" and is a reliable source. I used the Flag Institute as a reference when I overhauled the flag of Montserrat. From what I've seen Flagmakers suffers from circular sourcing. For instance Fiji and Vanuatu for examples. SVG-image-maker (talk) 00:59, 12 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@SVG-image-maker: That may be the case, but there are other issues with the file. In particular, the dolphins on the other version are completely unsatisfactory. Fry1989 eh? 19:15, 11 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

UK traffic sign 622.10[edit]

Hi, I see you reverted the edit I made to this sign (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:UK_traffic_sign_622.10.svg), but why upload the letter code as a separate file? Both the roundel and letter code plate are a single sign, as specified in the TSRGD 2016. Nathan A RF (talk) 20:52, 20 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Nathan A RF: Hi. There are two main reasons why I reverted the file. The first is that changing a file that has been here for 12 years in this manner is disruptive to the various projects that are using it. They are using it with the expectation of the file reflecting the sign without the letter code, which I disagree are a single combined image. The second is that the letter code is specific to certain conditions, and there are several variations. Should the image be used on a project in relation to conditions prescribed under another letter, it would be inaccurate. That is why I would recommend uploading it separately. If you want to be extra, like I often am, you may even want to upload every variation, so code A, B, C, D and so forth. That way we have every example. Fry1989 eh? 13:48, 21 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I checked what pages are using the sign as is and they are all either the "Comparisons of European road signs" pages and its translations or personal sandboxes. Adding the letter code will improve the former of these pages by displaying the correct, complete two-part sign (the two sign parts are also specified to be a certain distance apart when mounted). Further, in some European countries the letter code plate is not mandatory and/or it is defined as a separate sign. Here neither is the case. As for the other letter codes, I can upload all four if that would be better (B, C, D, E). Nathan A RF (talk) 16:12, 21 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Nathan A RF: I'm sorry for the slow response. I wasn't ignoring you, but this past week or two has been just awful for me. In any case, I believe it would remain beneficial to have a version of this sign without any attached letter code. Personally, I would upload each letter coded version as something like UK traffic sign 622.10+B. I won't force the issue, but that is how I would do it. Fry1989 eh? 13:35, 28 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
It's a tricky one as this is the only singularly defined UK road sign with two parts. Other prohibitory signs with mandatory plates such as the no vehicles roundel (617) and "No vehicles" plate (618.1) are defined separate signs. I maintain that the 622.10 roundel alone should not be uploaded, as the definition of the sign involves the plate: "Vehicles carrying dangerous goods within the tunnel restriction code indicated by the sign prohibited" (TSRGD 2016). While other European countries do use a similar roundel alone, the UK is not one of those. Nathan A RF (talk) 22:55, 29 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Nathan A RF: So it is your belief that there are zero legitimate circumstances, within our remit as an online encyclopaedia, where the roundel would be useful by itself? Fry1989 eh? 19:18, 8 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Not zero circumstances at all, just for the current uses of the file. If you think there'd be a use away from these current uses in future, then you could keep the roundel separate so long as it was explicitly labelled Nathan A RF (talk) 12:21, 9 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Category:Diagrams of cyclist dismount signs[edit]

I added in a diagram category for cyclist dismount signs, so you don't have to worry about it. VenderofSignSprees (talk) 19:30, 8 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hi @Fry1989 Sir, Can you re-design a logo into svg. It would be very helpful if you can do it. Please don't ignore this message. It is very important. If you can do it then please give me reply. I am sure that you can do it. It is a bangladesh army unit logo. So please take it seriously. Rishad Talukdar (talk) 08:28, 13 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Rishad Talukdar: Sorry for the slow response. Things got in the way. What logo is this that you would like me to create? Fry1989 eh? 19:12, 11 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Naming system for Irish directional and information road signs[edit]

Hi there. I plan to replace my PNGs of directional and information signs with SVGs. However, as you probably know, and unlike many other countries, signs containing destinations do not have a sign number. Because of this I named the PNGs after the figure number the sign is given in the TSM; however, the figure numbers I've referred to contain the dimension markings, not just the sign itself, and therefore the title I've given them is technically not correct. While I could instead give the SVGs the correct figure number (i.e. the examples of the sign which do not contain dimensions), I feel as though this naming system might not be adequate. I did have one possible idea - instead of naming the county boundary sign "IE TSM Ch 4 Fig 4.2.3" (not "File:IE TSM Ch 4 Fig 4.2.5.png" as I have done, as this figure in the TSM contains the dimensions), to name it "IE County Boundary Sign (Type A)", but I'm not sure how well this works with the currrent "IE road sign [sign no.]" system. Might you have any ideas as to what I could name the SVGs? EthanL13 (talk) 14:23, 16 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@EthanL13: Sorry for the delayed response. Things just got in the way. To be honest, I don't really know how to address the issue of directional signage like this. Fry1989 eh? 19:11, 11 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Alright, I will go with what I proposed. In any case the names can always be changed. EthanL13 (talk) 22:42, 11 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Please stop repurposing and deleting the redirect that focuses on national flags[edit]

It is really getting bothering. I had placed a redirect to the correct new category for a good reason. SpinnerLaserzthe2nd (talk) 01:48, 17 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I was going to say it's really annoying that you're following me around and creating unneccessary redirects. There is no real reason for them, and you editing on my shoulders is getting under my skin. Fry1989 eh? 15:14, 17 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Emblem of the Republic of Afghanistan, 1974 Government documents found[edit]

Hello Fry1989, after searching, I have found an official paper which was published in Afghanistan during the Republic of Afghanistan and it has Daoud Khan’s emblem on it. I am inclined to tell everyone that this edit needs to be reverted as it is inaccurate, and the version of the emblem made by RevolutionaryPatriot is far more accurate. I do appreciate both designs! :) Please feel free to zoom in on this government almanac from 1974. http://afghandata.org:8080/xmlui/handle/azu/15354 AfghanParatrooper19891 (talk) 06:39, 5 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]

The font used on the East German Nationale Volksarmee Coat of Arms[edit]

Recently i had the idea to do an alternate universe country where France (my country) is now the French Democratic Republic in reference to the German Democratic Republic, so i took all the East German flags and logos and remake them in french version, and when i was about to do the army Coat of Arms, i was unable to find the font used on the Nationale Volksarmee Coat of Arms on Wikipedia, so i ask you the creator of this version if you can give me the font you used. БРИАН.Ю.М (talk) 18:37, 9 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I'm sorry, but I do not know the typeface. Fry1989 eh? 18:03, 13 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
But, aren't you the one who made this emblem ? Because if you don't remember the typeface, can you make a new version of it with a new font ? I have searched the Nationale Volksarmee flags and it looks like they have different fonts than the current version. БРИАН.Ю.М (talk) 02:10, 14 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@БРИАН.Ю.М: I did not. The file was initially uploaded by User:Jwnabd, and I merely removed the black stroke from the lettering. I'm sorry, but I have no idea what typeface was used. Fry1989 eh? 17:17, 14 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh's COA (augmented as GCStJ) - request[edit]

Hello Fry1989

Your admirable representation of Sophie, then Countess of Wessex's armorial bearings (subsequently amended by Sodacan), should now display in chief the GCStJ augmentation of honour, viz. the arms of the Most Venerable Order of St John:

- the Most Venerable Order of St John's arms are blazoned:
Gules on a Cross Argent in the first quarter a representation of the Royal Crest of England (upon a Royal Crown Proper a Lion statant guardant Or royally crowned Proper).

Qv. HRH The Duchess of Edinburgh's heraldic banner at the Priory Church of the Order of St John;
NB. - as a guide this is the SMOM augmentation in chief.

It would be fab if you could create an updated image of these accordingly; the GCVO insignia is optional (artist's licence), given that the Royal Victorian Order circlet surrounds the Shield.

Please advise - looking forward to hearing from you - many thanks.

Best Primm1234 (talk) 17:44, 19 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Primm1234: The original image is also by Sodacan. I only made very minor changes in the past. My abilities are limited. I could, for example, place it as an inescutcheon. Placing it in chief would require more technical augmentation of the escutcheon, and I do not know how to do that. It would look very bad, "scruntched" for lack of a better term. Unfortunately, Sodacan has been absent for quite some time. I am afraid you will need to request assistance from another heraldic artist. Fry1989 eh? 19:33, 20 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Rename file[edit]

Could you rename File:Flag of Swaziland (1968–2011).svg to File:Flag of Swaziland (1967–2011).svg? The adoption date comes from [46] SVG-image-maker (talk) 01:50, 20 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Done. Fry1989 eh? 19:23, 20 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
