DIY Self-Publishing vs. Supported Self-Publishing: What's Right for You?

If you want to get your book published your way by self-publishing, you have a couple of options to take. You can do everything yourself or seek support from a self-publishing company.

DIY vs Supported Self-Publishing

There are two main types of self-publishing: DIY self-publishing and supported self-publishing. In this blog post, we’ll discuss the differences between these two methods, so you can decide which one is right for you.

What is DIY self-publishing?

DIY self-publishing (also known as independent publishing) is a publishing model that involves the author taking on the majority of responsibility for creating, formatting, distributing, and marketing their own book.

You are DIY self-publishing if:

• You handle everything from designing the cover and interior layout to printing or ordering the books, uploading them to retailers, and creating a promotional plan.

• You handle the vetting, hiring, and dealing with professionals who can assist you in creating and publishing your book.

PROS

Freedom and Control – Self-publishing gives authors better control over the entire publishing process, from the writing to the editing to the design. You don’t have to wait for a publisher to approve your book; you can make all the decisions yourself.

Speed – The process of getting a book traditionally published can be incredibly slow, whereas self-publishing allows you to publish your book in a matter of weeks.

Profit – When you self-publish, you keep a huge portion of the profits from your book sales. You don’t have to split them with a publisher like you would if you went the traditional route.

Accessibility – Self-publishing makes it easy for authors to reach readers all over the world, thanks to online stores like Amazon and other ebook retailers.

CONS

Cost – Self-publishing can be more expensive than traditional publishing, as you’re responsible for covering all the costs associated with producing and marketing your book.

Quality – Because you are in charge of the entire production process, there’s no guarantee that your book will be of the same quality as a traditionally published book. You’ll need to take extra care to make sure your book is edited, designed, and produced properly.

Visibility – When you self-publish, you’re responsible for marketing your own book. This can be difficult if you don’t have any prior experience in marketing or promotion.
